If it happens, awesome! I'll be getting one ASAP. If it doesn't, I won't be surprised in the least.

We're such a small market (relatively speaking) we may be being used as a guinea pig for future Apple marketing strategy.
Pricing is the big question mark given Apple has waived its ongoing telco revenue stream.
Will be interesting to see what competition arises, if any, from the telco to convince the iPhone market to sign up, ie reasonable iPhone specific plans... no doubt with their own lock-in contracts.

Equal access for all customers, forcing the carriers to actually compete on pricing and data? Really, this is the best possible news for us.
In fact it's so awesome that I won't be able to let myself believe it's true until it's announced for real. (fingers crossed)

Nice juicy story Decryption!
My bet is that it will be 3G.
Since it's not locked to any network it will be sold outright, hmm wonder what the price will be and if we'll be raped by Apple with the currency conversion.
Although I do admit, and did see the thread about the currency conversation and it is noticeably getting better. I just hope Apple releases it for a very reasonable price to try and strongly break into the market because I can't see the majority of Australians quickly adopting the device even though I think it's a brilliant device.

Here's hoping! Kevin Rudd should be advertising Australia as a testing ground for big corporations to "try new things"....

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
And it's about bloody time! I've been waiting for ages! But now... NOW I shall buy the iPhone, take it out, and astound everyone by swiping my finger across the screen to unlock it, amid gasps of awe and wonder.
Ok, sorry, got a bit carried away there!

The only problem with a "no lock in" contract is that the bits that have been added to contracts that do lock you in will probably be missing from any contract here:
No unlimited carrier data
No bundled unlimited WiFi
I think that's a bit of a shame, if I'd been staying in the UK I'd have signed up to the O2 deal simply because of the value for money that those two things represent.

My bet is that this thread is going to be one of the longest, fastest growing threads in all of MacTalk history. Apart from the thread where the iPhone was announced.
I also think MacTalk is soon going to be flooded with threads such as "POLL: What carrier are you choosing for Aus iPhone" and "Speculation on RRP of iPhone!" and "FS: Jailbroken iPhone from America" x10.
