I love the people who have joined the forum today just to be naysayers. Welcome to MacTalk.

Me I am going with hope (and a little skepticism). I don't believe decryption would deliberately mislead us.

Possible!

Speculative. It could be both Aus and japan and even others like singapore at the same time

I doubt that as i read that it was 3 weeks and not 6 months!

Again Speculative. The market size of Australia would suggest an open model instead of the closed model you are talking about. How many customers you think Optus has? enough to entice appl, i guess not!

Apple have said recently that they are not married to a particular business model. France is an example of what has been mentioned in this thread.

Did he personally come and tell you this?

Again, have you heard about something called an NDA?

Australia has been a testing ground for global companies in the past, they do test on small markets to see how things go before they make a more global decision. We all know that the Australian public a high tech, well informed nation. It is also far far away from markets in the US and Europe. What happens in their test market (financially) probably doesn't matter one bit to them, it's the buying trends and consumer interest in these models that they really want to analyse, before moving into other bigger markets.

Thats right, a perfect example is the Microsoft "It's not cheating" deal where students can purchase Office 2007 for either $25 for a year, $50 for 3 years or $75 for good. They then proceeded to push it out in the states.

The important part of what my local reseller Manager told me is that they've been told nothing, they've spoken to the crew at Apple Aus and they either know nothing or have given no information.

The rest of what the store Manager told me is stuff you can read anywhere on the net right now...

Looks like it might well be false info pushed out to see who's leaked it from Apple.. like the ol' Apple Asteroid (firewire interface for Garageband)....

If I were Apple and considering launching the iPhone in Australia, I'd first want to build a few of my own Apple retails store in Sydney and Melbourne to ensure I could make a bit of extra profit by selling them direct (plus people like buying their phone's from an actual store). Then, once the stores were completed I'd use the iPhone as a launching tool to get a heap of media coverage about the new stores, and lots of foot traffic in the the doors.

.... oh wait - Apple's already doing that.... wonder when the stores will be opening?

This is all good and well but until its available on Apple.com.au then my plans haven't changed. An iPhone for me combines my iPod touch and sms from my crappy phone. I don't do many calls. I have wifi at home and work. I will order mine from priceusa at the end of April like I planned 1 month ago.

definitely, if in fact they are actually claiming they know anything with any certainty.

i dont think they have said that tho', its still just rumours and speculation.

Oh, for all the other journalists reading this article, my name is Anthony Agius. Seeing myself referred to as decryption is kinda weird
