All good Decryption.........worth the LONG wait.
Glad my resolve held up - soooo tempted to purchase earlier. The good thing is we will now have some support/warranty action with purchase.
Just praying we don't get any prick ache from the telstra geezers now.
Fingers crossed your scoop is on the money Decryption and the phone is open slather.
Made my day man.

The best bit of this news is the lack of carrier lock-in, specifically lack of Telstra lock in. Almost too good to be true.
But I do have one little bit of concern for you Decryption - Do you think Apple will pull a think secret on you?

Man, this thread is hysteria. I can't be bothered reading through it all but just have to add my two cents.
If released today under similar arrangements as those in the US, the iPhone in AU should cost $499/$629 for the 8/16 GB respectively, plus contract costs.
So as the speculation suggest the iPhone maybe 3G, have other enhancements (eg GPS) and won't be on a contract, then no one could expect it to be as cheap as the prices quoted above. But without knowing the features/specs, one can only take a punt:
$599/$749/$899 for the 8GB/16GB/32GB (yes, a new capacity model) respectively.
So as everyone is saying, you heard it here first

I submitted the story to MacDailyNews and it's just been picked up.
MacDailyNews - RUMOR: Leaked info points to unlocked, next-gen Apple iPhone coming to Australia last week of June
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers "bstoned" and " Joel" for the heads up.]

This will be interesting to see. What will be even more interesting is how quickly eBay will dry up with iPhones! I'm sure if a lot of them hear about it happening they will stop bringing them in and making a mint. )
But yes, can see reasons for what's been mentioned.
Time will tell.
The price set will be something else to watch. )
Heres looking eh,..... ) Countdown,..starts,....now,......

Is it possible that the reason the resellers have been told is that Apple are going to have to obtain government approval to sell the phone - and such an application would be in the public domain anyway?
When the iPhone was launched in the US it was announced 6 mths early - I think this was partially so that they could proceed with getting approvals for it to be used on the networks. Could there be a similar requirement here?

Well having met decryption in person, even if it were some years back, I have no reason to suspect he would be making any of this up.
Perhaps another reason that Apple may choose to sell iPhone unlocked in Australia is choice of coverage versus value for money on mobile plans. For some people, Telstra will be the only option coverage-wise, so they just have to pay the premium to Telstra; there's no other option. However, if Apple chose another carrier other than Telstra, these people won't have the option of using an iPhone at all. On the other hand, for many people that don't need Telstra's extensive coverage (for example, if they live in one of the capital cities and seldom go away), paying Telstra's premium for network access won't be an option either. Therefore it's better for Apple to offer the iPhone unlocked, since both categories of user will be able to use it.

Hi, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but I did a search and just ended up covered with iphone topics...
Will the iPhone have HSDPA in addition to 3G? People keep on using the terms interchangeably but as far as I'm concerned they're two very different capabilities (HSPDA is a lot faster, can't remember how much).
If someone could set me straight that would be fantastic.

HSDPA is a 3G technology and yes, HSDPA will be on a "3G" iPhone.

Just a small comment on the no -lock in contract. It might mean better deals. Optus v Telstra v ... Might end up with
"Put your iPhone on Telstra & get 1gb of data free" (then huge per/mb price after the 1gb). Just have to wait and see.

So excuse my ignorance here but if Apple releases an unlocked iPhone, I could in reality drop my present 3 network SIM card in the iPhone and away I go????

Yes, but only if the iPhone is 3G as well. On another carrier you could do that if the iPhone isn't 3G (and you have a GPRS sim/carrier).

FineWine - depends if the iPhone will be capable of 3G (likely I would think according to the rumour) - I am pretty sure that 3 don't have coverage of the current iPhone band.
edit: as marc said
I would like to say thank god, finally!! Bring on the end of June.
