I love talking to people in my office about their 3G phones.

"What? It's a phone!"
"Yeah, but with 3G you can do other stuff, like..."

There was once a time when nobody bothered with SMS. Why do that when you can just call someone.

You have not been here long enough to remember the late and great Itunes Music store Australia thread, I think that may still hold the record and was over 1,000

I would like to know which resellers were told? I work for a reseller and talked with the owners and managers and they haven't heard a thing, this is after recent meetings with Apple on other matters.

If I say which resellers I found out from, it would become blindingly obvious who told me and get me and them in trouble.
Which reseller do you work for?

I was excited at first, but there have been enough dissenting voices for me to think it might just be too good to be true.
Anthony, did the resellers pass on the information independent of each other?

FWIW, Australian Macworld says their sources agree.

If your bosses know you're on MacTalk, I'd suggest they're keeping it from you intentionally

I have a feeling too that this is too good to be true. Why would Australia be the first place that Apple will be rolling out unlocked phones? Although I don't dispute the fact that we will be getting the iPhone sometime in June, I'm fairly dubious about claims that it will be sold unlocked.
Other than that, they might charge a massive premium on unlocked phones like they do in France.

more like the bosses dont know either, even the owners of reseller stores know nothing in advance.'
this stuff is all rumours fuelled by a comment here and a comment there - most of it seeded by Apple. we know exactly as much or as little as they want us to.
look how apple manipulate the market every tuesday alone!!
sure there willl be a 3G iPhone released some time this year, but we really know no more today than we did yesterday.
our strings have just been tugged on by the apple puppeteers.

Now this info / rumour / speculation is the best news I've heard in a long time!!!!
WOOHOO!!!!
Can't wait and if its true - June can't finish soon enough!
Lucky I'm doing lots of overseas traveling at the moment.
Back in Aust third week of June too - just in time to ensure I grab one of the earliest / fastest official Aust released iPhones as soon as I can!
Thanks for the great thread!

Yep - they told me individually.
Looks like you aren't alone on not believing me:
iTWire - Australia to get worlds first truly unlocked 3G iPhone?
Blogs - Traffic - ZDNet Australia
But that's fine and doesn't bother me. Most people know to take anything that isn't from Apple directly with a grain of salt (I hope so at least, trusting me as a single source is a bit silly). I reported what I was told and I know I'm not lying or making things up simply to get hits. The people that told me are professional and personal friends of mine and I doubt they'd mislead me on purpose.
I gave justifications for why I think what they told me is true. Feel free to make your own! End of the day, no-one who is able to say anything actually knows anything concrete. Those that do have NDAs or other reasons not to (Steve Jobs burning their house down for example), so it's difficult to verify.
I don't know what those reporters expect to gain by calling up the store, asking a cashier/floor sales person or even a store manager and asking about the iPhone. Only 1 or two people would know in each company and they wouldn't tell anyone because they're afraid of leaks going back to them and consequently, them being reamed by Apple. So if you work for a reseller, don't expect to be told, your boss probably doesn't even know. They don't want you telling customers.
MacWorld (who would have connections in resellers similar to mine - something ZD Net and ITWire and the other non-Mac centric journalists wouldn't have) has also verified my story in the same way I did, by not mentioning sources.
