I wouldn't buy a non 3G iphone but if V2.0 works on NextG (and it should) then I really should get one.
*wonders*
Could the sim card inside an orange 3 series Telstra NextG USB modem be used for voice calls in an iphone V2.0?
I know they'll do SMS and I've already got one tied into a data plan.
2 Telstra data plans would be a bit expensive and no one else has coverage out here...

I cant imagine it costing near the $1000 dollar mark like people are suggesting... Apple control a lot of their prices so to reduce the overseas purchasing. So one price here may only be slightly more expensive than over there..
Also I cant imagine a $500 dollar increase on the iPhone. I can buy one from the US for what at the moment... {goes and checks US site...} $430AU (8GB) or $538AU (16GB). Add $50 on top for shipment.. Please... There is no way it will be $1000. Too much of an increase... I suspect $100 - $200 increase maximum... (bookmarks thread for later abuse for talking crap!!).
Lets not worry to much about the device cost... Lets worry about how Telstra's going to screw us over on Data.. Please dont do it to me Telstra!

I thought of this too and I think also the reason higher prices for unlocked phones in germany and others is that maybe because apple had a deal with the carrier so therefore had to make the locked phones more attractive?

As much as I want to believe that this is all true, may I just point out that there is no way it could be.
Let me guarantee, I will be first in line to get the AU iPhone. But with having worked for resellers for a number of years I can tell you that Australian Reseller Channel partners are the LAST to hear about anything (Literally - new products will be on Apple.com before the channel partners are informed about it). Let alone something months in advance, let alone a product that has not been announced in the US yet.
Please don't hate me for bringing you back to earth.
I'm tipping December.... at the earliest.

Glad to see that my timeframe wasn't far out - as I said before, if it took any longer they might as well forget about it - there's so many clones on the market already. It's incredible how a new player like Apple can enter the market (which all the experts said they would fail dismally in BTW) and totally whip the competition and re-define mobile phones as we know them. Apple has done incredibly well with the iPhone by 'thinking different' and the rest of the mobile makers are scrambling to catch up (or just blatantly copy) as per the iPod phenominem.
....Stand by for iZune-a-phone... available in brown of course!

Ive known this since easter when i was talking to my gfs uncle who was pretty high up at telstra until he quit and had to sign many NDA's. He didnt definitely say anything but said alot without saying anything if that makes any sense.
So this all ties in rather nicely! Awesome!

pricing. Apple will & are capable of ripping Australians off at their whim.
macbook Air $2499 AUD
$1799 USD
shall i continue......
iPhone AUD $799 easy, all you need to do is look at what prices mobile fonies have been paying for new releases over the past years.

very true, i have to agree - resellers dont know about the release of things like new MBP's until the night of their release.
i dont there is any truth to the rumours, but its all good fun!
of course a carrier free, 3G iPhone might launch in june - but the rumours are just that and it will be coincidence rather than leaked information.
