One thing I find quite ironic is that only 10 years ago, he was writing articles like this about Apple. Remember the whole saga with his opinions on the original iBooks?

The problem with the PC world is mostly down to the fragmented nature of it and the current world culture of proprietorialism over defined standards.
Now, while Macroslop are not blameless in this, they built the ecosystem they live in, they are an easy target for any problem caused by lack of interoperability. Like Apple, Microsoft set API and hardware standards, but have little control over them, and as people interact primarily with the OS, they blame Microsoft regardless of who wrote the app that just went BSOD. Apple doesn't get this negative corona effect because there is less hardware to have to plan for, and they have solutions for most creativity and productivity needs developed in-house to strict hardware limits. The other reason I think people hate Macroslop is like "cop car syndrome". If the police have holdens, most police tend to buy fords as their private car, and vice-versa. (There is no scientific proof of this phenomenon, but it's an fun barbecue stopper in my circles.) Most of us have PCs inflicted on us at work, and seeing the same environment at home is like "living across the road the factory." That said, the PC ecosystem is a rague of legacy piled on starchy lack of definition, served with a helping of bad design and drowned in a sauce of poor quality control. Pass the ketchup, it's the only way I can swallow it. |
