Hi guys,

I thought I would share a recent experience I had with a client of mine.

I was discussing the work we were doing on their project and I happened to mention that we switched all our work systems to Mac.

His reaction was "Mac! What's wrong with you?"

I calmly pretended not to have heard that :P and continued the conversation.

Anyone else got a funny story about reactions, particularly from work situations to you switching?

I had a discussion with a guy studying IT (the son of one of the most wealthy men in adelaide) one night. I told him about appletalk, and he freaked out saying how macs suck, nothing is compatible with them and they're a waste of time. - oh, and how unix is sooo much better.

So for the next twenty he heard all about darwin, OS X, pricing, and the rest. I rebutted his every point and he still argued. Fortunately, i'd convinced his friends who were now backing me up.

Hi

Well being a PC user for about 10 years now, I use to dismiss mac thinking that they were way to expensive for what they do (and I still think tend to think that to some degree) BUT I must say that after buying the Mac Mini I am amazed at how easy it is to network to my current office setup and use. This is what should be pushed in the mac advertising ethos I feel.

I think what PC users think that Macs are just way too different, and unfortunately the Mac image is that you are different, when in reality they are very similar in many ways.

BUT Saying that I am now a mac convert, I think because of the build quality, and mainly also wanting to try a new way of using an operating system....After only 2 weeks with my mini I am thinking of getting a mac laptop now :-)

I've heard plenty of people say 'I hate Apple's they're all gay ...'

They seem to have no points though, no education about what OSX is all about ... one guy just said 'Apple's one of those companies I just hate for no reason ...'

just about everyone who drops into our house to find several bodies on the sofa playing around with apple laptops: "why the hell are you all using macs?"
my uncle: "what's wrong with people in this house?"
most of my friends used to give me crap about using apple computers but since being exposed to them a lot have either bought one or are planning to.

This may sound amazing but I haven't had any negative reactions.
Everybody has said 'You have a mac, cool' or 'It's white cool' or 'Oooooo eye candy'.
Also, one guy was a bit worried I was getting a mac. But I outlined everything it could do, and then when I finally got it he saw it could do even more. He is now considering getting one.
These things are great, they seem to sell themselves to anybody with an open mind.

I remember back at boarding school when people found out i had a Mac they'd say things like, "oooh, you're a MAC USER!!!! You're GAY!!!!!", or "Macs suck cuz they're too slow and they only have 1 mouse button and they don't have DOS", whereas at uni, people are quite friendly towards Mac users.

… they don't have DOS
wondering if many users out there in windoze land even know what it stands for … let alone what it means

And why would your friendship have anything to do with what sort of computer one uses?

Now matter how many ways you try to convince a PC user they are always going to be skeptical about macs.

Those that say macs sucks are thick headed whingers. I guess their just not as open minded.

But I do understand from their point of view why they may hate it, software isnt as good on the macs unless its to do with multimedia work.

None of this matters to the mac heads out there as they believe macs are the best thing since sliced bread.

I was able to convince a few to switch over at my uni and now they love it. Even my teacher who taught windows thought macs were cool.

I received a whole load of rubbish from friends and family members when I was talking of making the switch to mac from windows. It's amazing to see their reactions now when I show them things like expose and dashboard. I just hope some of them take a more open approach to macs in the future.

was at latrobe uni this morning. took my laptop out and plugged it into the computer study hall network (behind the help desk). i instantly got 3 or 4 admins/pc geeks crowd around giving me weird looks (probably wanted to say something nasty to me but thought they might take the mature route). anyway i needed to print a receipt so i opened printer setup utility and clicked add andup came a choice of 4 laser printers. i double clicked on some obscure branded one and used the generic postscript drivers and printed. i then closed my laptop up and went to put it in my bag. i then turned around and they were all standing there with looks of amazement on their faces and one of them said ' wow, cool, i wish my pc could do that with such ease. its hard enough to find any drivers that would with that printer'

i walked out and felt great about being a mac user.

A few years ago I was looking at buying a digital camera. I scoped out which model I wanted and went into the store to test it out. I had never even used a digital camera before (this was about 12 months before they really took off) so took my laptop in to the store to see if it could download from the camera.

When I pulled my iBook out the sales person said "oh, it's a Mac. They do things differently".

I plugged in the USB cable and turned the camera control to download. Image Capture popped up, pulled down the pictures then displayed them in a window.

"I know they do things differently", I said to the sales person, "they work"

Well, maybe they are thinking DoS. But seriously, working in IT (for the record, I do networking, not desktop support) at a University that has supported dorm rooms for years and recently started supporting wireless connectivity, I really can't figure out why people would not choose a Mac.

The worst problem with connecting a Mac to the WLAN was the lack of AirPort card, the second worst was that the antenna was not quite plugged in! I won't go into the horrors of what has happened with the other laptops.

I've found that lots of "hard core" IT workers, those with a UNIX background or those that can configure IOS in their sleep are switching to PowerBooks in droves. The rest of the guys that stick with the "Macs suck" mantra, well, I think they are just scared, maybe they didn't learn to use a "computer", maybe they learned to use Windows.

I think I could go on for pages ranting about they way things should work, but i've found its best to be quiet, do my work, while the others are having troubles installing drivers, trying to connect a projector or reboot for the n'th time.
