This is not to everyone:

Some of you guys whinging about them not offering it to you for $5 are kidding yourselves. Grow up, seriously.

They make a mistake on their website, which we all knew was a mistake but were willing to take the risk on the off-chance. Then some you have the hide to whinge and complain, like you have been severely affected.

Now, come on. An apology letter is all that they owe to all of us. Offering it at cost price is a nice bonus. Not all companies, even big corporates can afford to take a loss as suggested.

I can't believe some people are actually annoyed, or actually expected to get it at $5.00.

And please guys, stop quoting Laws you don;t understand, or at least add to the post that your not an authority on the topic.

Assuming the cost of this error WAS $50,000 to DSE as quoted in this thread... Consider what would be the cost to their marketing department to develolp and implement such a campaign - albeit with the correct price.

What have they learnt?
- the word-of-mouth factor is FAST and effective online.
- that forums like this have LARGE eyeballs that are there to be utilised with attractively priced "special offers" and targetted offers
- that marketing strategies for online need to be approached differently than catalogue/tv/radio channels

Surely all this knowledge was worth the $50,000 in "marketing consultant" fees??

Wowtopia asked if he got it. Lumus replied that he did. It helps to read.

Well they know all that for next time, and they didn't have to pay out $x,xxx amount of Apple iWork 09 to find out.

Problems with forums is people are generally all a bunch of tight a**** (this one in particular). So, they wont get return business unless everything they sell is stupidly cheap, so they'll probably make a loss on the initial sale they do make, if they don't make a loss, then it'll be cheaper from Hong Kong, which is where you'll buy it from.

So what's the frikin point?

The only thing they would possibly get out of it is a good write up in some raggy news paper like the herald sun. In reality, what they would probably get is shit canned on every geek forum about their lame attempt to win our hearts as displayed by the people pissing and moaning about the discount they offered in this circumstance.

Don't think people on here, and forums in general are tight?

Go read any camera thread where people just google the cheapest, straight out of asia option, or for sale threads where people ALWAYS try to low ball the seller with insulting offers. I've recently parted with some JBL speakers, some BOSE head phones, an IXUS 860, some apple software and assorted bit and pieces all of which I didn't offer though here because ebay is less trouble.

For the record, I do buy stuff from DSE because in general I've always had decent service, and I'm a strong believer in keeping local people in a job, not some guy in Hong Kong that doesn't give a f*** about the moron in Australia. It's such an issue that I've even been called "f****ing stupid" (well it's been very clearly implied) on here for suggesting it's a good idea to spend a little more to support locals. Yes, I'm the stupid one for wanting to keep people, people like you and I, in a job [insert implied comment here regarding the intelligence of said person that will probably get me banned].

Now, I'm not really qualified in marketing. The above comments are based on research I read as part of my study, and the decision the company I used to work for made (to not go with any kind of forum advertising due to lack of investment return).

I'm pretty sure one of their marketing consultants told them that already.

I'm doing Business management, and the research was done in house with the help of some over paid firm.

The company I work for now, is of the same opinion and when I approached a marketing consultant at my old girlfriends work (big design house in the city) regarding setting up some advertising stuff on a forum I used to run he had a good old laugh (he was not an old hat set in his way kinda guy either).

thats interesting considering dick smith has had nothing to do with the business for years!

i must admit i am gobsmacked that there is 20 something pages of discussion about paying $5 for an app suite that was available for free within minutes of it being released!

(i know, i know, not legit, but how many of us can claim the high moral ground on copyright?!)

While I agree with this sentiment, MacTalk is one of the least cheap-skatey forums around. It's still a bunch of cheapskates, just not as bad as others. Visit Whirlpool or OCAU. There are your scrooges (and I love them for it).
