I was just browsing through the refurb store seeing if there is anything cheap and guess what, there is! I thought I'd share it with you all and it would give me another chance to shamelessly link you to the store via our affiliate link, where if you click the link and buy a Mac (or iPod, or anything on the Apple online store) within 30 days of clicking, MacTalk gets a commission.
Updated 14th Jan, 2009 Refurb Mac Store Unibody 15" MacBook Pro - 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 2.53GHz - $3399 ($3,999 new - save $600) White Plastic MacBook - 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD - $1599 20" Alu iMac - 2.4GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, ATI 2400 XT - $1309 24" Alu iMac - 2.4GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 320GB HDD, ATI 2600 Pro - $1709 Refurb iPod Store 16GB iPod Touch (1st Gen) - $299 80GB iPod Classic - $229 So if you're in the market for a Mac or an iPod, take a look at the Apple Store's Refurbished section - they come with a full 12 month warranty like a new product, so there is piece of mind that a refurb product is just as good as new.

Was looking at the store last night too... Good experience with a refurb iPod, so I'll go refurb Mac as well - also when I have the funds... Guess the really good stuff gets snazzled quick...

those prices are not that great are they? on ebay you can buy those brand new for the same price,
look at this link. http://feedback.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayI...00861&frm=1883 MacBook Pro15-inch 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo SEALED IN BOX (#200236250110) AU $1,975.00 and MacBook Air 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo Super Slim SEALED IN BOX (#200236019872) AU $1,725.00 |

When I bought my iPod, I checked eBay. There were other similar nanos available, including the 1 year warranty (presumably they were in fact purchased from Apple's refurb store, as they were identical), but they were priced about $30 more...
Similar non-warrantied iPods were selling for maybe $10-$30 cheaper. Most of the time if something "new" on eBay sells for much less than RRP, there's something untoward going on... Could be legit; may not be.

Chances are these are A) dodgy or B) from the USA. Feel free to spend your hard earned over with a stranger on eBay, but I wouldn't. Buying direct from Apple, with free shipping is the safest way to go. I also doubt you'd get great after-sales support from an eBay seller compared to Apple direct. (Disclaimer, I want you to buy from Apple so MacTalk gets a cut, but my points are still valid - it's up to you in the end however)

Agreed. I never would buy anything electronic from eBay. Even if it's "new" or a superseller whatever. You can never be guaranteed anything on eBay, even Paypal or their safeguard protection services. It's only to a certain limit. Sure you might get a great bargain - but when its only like $100 off, it's really not worth it - and then you have to include registered post etc which all adds up in the end. I would only stick to buying accessories, CDs and the like. You can never be sure where the devices come from, and whether the real warranties are included. But like decryption says - it's your money! Do what you like! I rather get it from the Apple store and be guaranteed EVERY TIME.

I've looked at eBay quite a number of times - since my friend's tell me how I'm somehow "ripping them off" if I sell an item that is higher than what eBay is asking for (there's a difference between current bid and final amount
).Anyway, there are lots of reasons to go with the Apple Store, as decryption has mentioned - peace of mind, 12 month warranty, free courier etc... but to add to that, this is what I think is really great about the Apple Store too: 1. Item tracking. You can track your order! Sure eBay might be able to offer this but try tracking with AustPost if they even offer it for domestic services. 2. Aussie duckheads, as mentioned. You don't need to fiddle around with adapters and sourcing duckheads for Aussie outlets. 3. DOA policy and exchange policy. Not happy? Refund it. Dead machine? Replace it. Apple does the lot and couriers to your door, no charge. These little extras are the reasons why I would go to the Apple Store online rather than eBay. Warranty. Tracking. Returns. Power plugs. |

Bought my 1st gen shuffle from the refurb store last year-delivery is speedy to the Gold Coast.
However, my 2nd gen nano was purchased at BigW ($98 vs $120-130 at the refurb store).

Just purchased the Air for 1950.
I was looking at 2350 for the EDU MBA... so I'm stoked with 1950 really. From what I've read, these machines are generally better than your regular Mac... because when they're made ready for the refurb store they are given the fine tooth comb. Just need to get a bag and Applecare now... I should be able to do the whole lot for under $2300! Applecare on Ebay Apple Store (Australia) - STM Small Loft for 13,3" MacBook - Choc/Orange |
