A) Tuesday afternoon
B) A dead hard-drive
It was a prank played on MacTalk by a couple of different sources.
If you want a bit more of an explanation as to what happened, take a listen of episode 29 of the podcast and it explains a bit: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/19/5091...9-boxtalk.html
There's not much more to say except it was a hoax and a couple of us at MacTalk got sucked into it by trusting some people a bit too much. I'm over it and learnt a lesson - anyone who thinks MacTalk is a less reputable site now, I won't blame them - hopefully our long history of being a useful source of information and guidance isn't too tarnished.

I seem to recall millions of Radio listners glued to their radio when "news broadcasts" of Martians reaching earth and getting ready to invade Earth were broadcast in 1938.
Even the masses can be hoaxed convincingly should one set about it int he right way.
There is no shame in being caught in a Hoax. As there is no Pride in executing one.
Now where my ray gun? them martians are a cummin...

Well, millions have been convinced for centuries that there is a man in the sky who answers requests if you believe in him - a well published book and some good story telling can convince millions.

Tall poppy syndrome.
MTA has a lot of potential, and good people around it. Protect that brand ( yes MTA is a brand ).
This is not another Mac site, its a unique Mac Australian site that allows member to voice how they feel, its a social network. It has the potential to rival a brick and mortar store, and it sure has the ability to sway people views.
Thats why you are a target, and will be in the future.
You scare people

I just knew this was going to happen, you can't say I didn't try to warn you. I PMed Decryption with the info that I had, I didn't want to say it publicly for obvious reasons (same reason there are no names being named).
Oh well I don't think it really is that big a deal in the end. It sucks a little because it did get so much attention but mactalk will rebound, none of us care anyway

You can't prove that. If I were you I'd be careful of vilifying any person's beliefs on here.
Let's just be candid and say there's a 50-50 chance you're right in thinking there's no God. If you're right, you just get to live this life, and then die. Simple. However, you are WRONG, and God exists, and the Bible is true, you loose everything promised by God and His Book, and incur great loss. Hence, if you believe the Bible and God, you loose nothing, and have a 50-50 chance of gaining everything promised by God in the Bible.
Consider the famous French philosopher, Blaise Pascal, and the wager he set forth. Read all about it here: Pascal's Wager - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

sorry ithinkmac, but that is one of the more ludicrous and illogical arguments i have ever seen used to justify the belief in that for which there is no evidence!
on that basis we would do well to believe in every single religion at once - in case any one was right - how would you suggest we go about that?!
we would also have to believe every single thing put forward that had a potential, positive consequence of belief - regardless of how irrational - just in case it turned out to be true.
i guess we would all have to believe there was something good in the box still, just in case there was!
(i did say i wasnt going to post in this thread again, i claim exemption due to the completely off topic nature of my reply!)

This is just getting off topic.
Mistakes were made, there is egg on faces. I personally apologise as I am sure decryption does as well. We received credible information from a credible source who is still credible - it just so happened some idiot played a very elaborate prank on this source. We got excited, probably took things too far and look where it got us. Lessons have been learnt. As Anthony has said, we won't be swimming in the rumour ocean again - not of this kind anyway. MacTalk is going to be focusing 110% on great content and a great Australian Mac community. I sincerely hope this little adventure does not overshadow everything else the site has accomplished.
Unless there are any major objections (email me of so), then I think this thread has run it's course.
Over and out
