News, News, News, and More News - Sunday, May 11

News, News, News, and More News
Sunday, May 11th Edition

MacWorld USA reviewed the Psystar "Open Computer" and discover that it's a turd. Noisy, not so fast, inability to do proper software upgrades and appalling support.

Parallels have long said that they will support virtualisation of a Mac on a Mac and finally, they have released a beta version of their Parallels Server software which will allow you to do so. It only support running Leopard Server on Leopard Server however.

It has been discovered that in the upcoming iPhone v2.0 firmware, there is an option to turn 3G support on and off, which must mean that a 3G iPhone is coming very very soon.

Also found in the iPhone v2.0 firmware is a function for .Mac to do push email, just like the Blackberry and Exchange. Looks like Apple is going to take them head on in this area.

AppleMatters are running a series on how to set up SSH tunnels. Incredibly useful stuff for when you need access to something via a secure, unfiltered connection, like say accessing websites that are blocked or using instant messaging somewhere it's disallowed.

Some app updates:
- Transmission, the best native Mac BitTorrent client goes to v1.2
- Plasq release Comic Life Magiq
VMWare release a beta of - VMWare 2.0, bringing multi-monitor support and better DirectX support amongst a raft of others

And some new apps that caught my eye:
- TapeDeck, a very cool looking app that does simple audio recording and files your recordings on tapes.
- Vidnik is a small app made by a Google employee to record video from a USB camera and directly upload to YouTube. It also includes simple editing features.

VMFusion 2.0b1 is rather quite stable and has some nice new looks and so far is working well.

I need to take a look at the Tape deck app as it may well come in handy.

It looks awesome - I haven't got a use for it really, but it's too cool not to mention

Also, iPhone's in the states and the UK are pretty much gone, with the Apple Store giving an "unavailable" note.

Interesting.

the out of stock iphones is rather interesting and could mean the 3g ones could be out sooner rather than later.
