Apple workstations popular at Beijing press center

Michael Phelps has won plenty of gold medals in Beijing, but by the sound of a recent Macworld piece about the Olympic press center, photographers have been awarding Apple a gold medal of its own. The company provided 50 Mac Pros with Aperture and other photography software to the Kodak Photographer's Center, and the machines have apparently been much more popular than Lenovo's offerings among the many photographers and photojournalists in attendance.

Apple's Olympic involvement actually goes back to the 2006 Winter Games in Turino, when the company first introduced photographers to Aperture. Many of those people are now experienced Aperture users, and Senior Product Manager of Photo Applications Joe Schorr has been taking notes and gathering plenty of user feedback in order to guide future development of the software.

Besides serving as a testbed, the photography workstations have also paid off for Apple in the form of product sales. Tech support personnel from Apple are also on hand at the press center giving product demonstrations and answering general Mac questions while also fixing DVD drives and network issues. Some members of the media have even taken a quick detour to the new Beijing Apple Store for a few Olympic souvenirs.

Now that is some good advertising!
