News, News, News and More News - Wednesday 2nd April Edition Edition
News, News, News and More Mews
Wednesday, April 2 Edition
First off today, it seems like Tuesday's in Cupertino are well and truly dead. We have not seen anything substantial for a few weeks now. Let's hope WWDC in June brings something big...
Not entirely Mac related, but big tech news nonetheless is word today that Dell is going to be cutting 6,000 jobs in order to further cut costs - looks like the $11.6B profit they made last year wasn't enough. Why do we care, well apparently "The big chunk, however, is going to come putting the squeeze on design, manufacturing, and logistics, as well as cutting component and material costs across all Dell product lines." That's all Dell need, uglier computers with even dodgier components...
It's not news for anyone who has used one, but latest figures show that the iPhone is kicking arse in the customer satisfaction department. The iPhone scored an impressive 79% with its nearest competitor, RIM, trailing by a massive 25%.
It looks like we will soon be seeing 10.5.3 hitting our Software Update, with Apple rapidly seeding developer releases (latest: 9D11). There are 19 more fixes detailed in the latest build including Airport, Dashboard, iCal and Time Machine.
A recent survey of 460 iPhone owners has found that the majority of those are not Mac users. It is also interesting to note that according to the survey, 13% have unlocked the device and 1/3 carry a second phone!
Who loves rumours!? According to some firm, Apple is apparently already testing full multi-touch Macs which look set for a 2010 delivery. This comes from supposed company insiders and compent suppliers. Although it is more than likely a load of you know what...who wouldn't love a multi-touch Mac!
Finally, Apple have released two new ads in the 'Get a Mac' series. They can be seen here. In my opinion, this whole idea of bashing Vista is getting very old, very fast. Come on Apple, throw us some new content!

Nah, I say go for the jugular.
Vista's reputation is getting worse and worse, why wouldn't Apple capitalise on it? This is the sort of opportunity money cannot buy.

Three new updates appeared on Software Update today ... QuickTime, iTunes and one more (that I've momentarily forgotten ) ... 100+Mb of updates though.
Edit: Front Row is the third piece of software getting an update.

I make a point of trashing Vista, and saying XP is fine to my non geek friends whenever the subject comes up... many techs I know say similar things.
It's hard to know how far that sort of thing has spread, but it is spreading.

The new Get a Mac Yoga ad is good! It's funny, (At least to me!) and clever.
I really like these News, News, News and More News. Keep it up!

I like the current Mac vs PC ads. They have a certain personality to them.
I haven't used Vista myself but everything I've read about it makes me think Microsoft has made a real blunder this time.

I've been using Vista (Home Premium x32) on my desktop since mid-2007, and there's really nothing major wrong with it, in my experience. It's crashed perhaps twice in that time, it runs the software and games I use just fine, driver availability for my hardware / peripherals was fine ...
I can understand why people might not like it; I can undersatnd why people might prefer XP Pro (or Leopard, or a Linux distro), but I'm yet to see what's so fundamentally bad about it that it makes a horrible choice for a desktop OS.

OK. I do accept that many people will like Vista. I'm happy that you are not having problems with it and I suspect it will give you good service for years to come.
Having said that there are opinions out there that do point to some problems with Vista for many people apart from yourself. One such example is an article is by The New York Times
I just have specific needs myself and that's why I prefer Leopard.

Very interesting article.
It seems that, on a truly 'capable' machine Vista is OK, but is nothing to write home about. I agree with the sentiment that, Leopard is a better choice for many users.

Maybe I'm lucky, maybe I do my research, maybe it's a combination of factors ... but I've never bought / installed an OS on any device - desktop, home-server, PDA, laptop - without first checking that it can do pretty much everything I want it to do. And, ironically perhaps, the only recent computer I've purchased that doesn't like one of my existing peripherals is my MacBook Air (there are no drivers / support for my Olympus digital dictaphone).

So far, I have to say I prefer Leopard to XP Pro on a laptop, prefer Vista to XP Pro on a desktop, prefer WindowsMobile to Palm OS on a PDA ... that's why there is a range of operating systems, and why it's fantastic to have that choice.
And yes, when companies use misleading advertising, they deserve to be smacked. But does that really reflect badly on the OS, or the company making the OS?

I'm sorry to hear about your driver problem. How old is your Olympus digital dictaphone? Did you check the Olympus web site? I hope it didn't cost you too much money for the dictaphone. I know how annoying that can be.

I can agree it is good to have a choice. I've nearly finished my Diploma in IT (I have 2 Certificate 4s in IT) and I've been exposed to different operating systems including different versions of Windows and Linux.

It depends on what they are advertising. If it's misleading advertising about the OS then it reflects badly on BOTH the OS and the company.
As it is you do have a choice as to what you use. If you don't like the Mac OS then you're free to stick to something you like.
I just know what works for me and I'll be sticking with the Mac.

Either that, or they're beefing up their web site to cope with the surge of page requests that were coming from Australia every Tuesday night.
