Excellent! I hope that Apple can bring this up to Brisbane soon as well. Apple does cop a bit of flack because they have not been as vocal as other manufacturers in the past. Dell hosted a recycling day (for computers) a while back up here and got a fair amount of press for it.

There is also some rumour fuel in those pages.

Quote:
Arsenic: Used as an industry standard material in liquid crystal displays (LCDs), arsenic is added to prevent the formation of defects in the glass. Apple is on track to introduce our first displays using arsenic-free glass in 2007 and we plan to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008.
Mercury: For flat-panel displays, Apple selects backlight lamps that contain extremely low quantities of mercury (< 3.5 mg per lamp). The use of mercury in backlight lamps is currently industry standard. Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting for all displays. iPods already use LEDs to illuminate their displays and therefore do not contain mercury.

Too little too late. For ten hours they will take back years of accumulated Apple junk. They'd be better off making a long term financial contribution to initiatives like byte back.

Wasn't there a huge outcry recently about how Apple were the WORST of the bunch when it comes to using recycled parts and materials and how they choose to take no responsibility for their used products?

This is a good move by them, but I do feel that it's a bit cynical and merely reactionary to their previous woes.

They're hardly even promoting it. Something this important should really be visible from the front page of the Apple Website.

It gets because it's a great idea..

They'll get if they make a habit of it.

Better late than never.

Not that this is any excuse for Apple not doing their part, but I would actually like to know the percentages of all computers manufactured that have been discarded, with the numbers broken down in to Apple and non-Apple. Macs seems to kick on for longer than PCs.

I think they have announced this too late. It's not enough notice for businesses and schools. Nice gesture though.

Anyone know of a recycling service in Brisbane? I've got 3 old PC's to get rid of.

For those who are not in Sydney or Melbourne, check out the Recycling Computer gear thread under the Apple General forum :-

Recycling Computers, Monitors & Hardware

Check also your local and state government web sites as there is bound to be a list of places that will take computer gear for recycling or resale, often at no cost to you and sometimes with free collection if you have enough of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong and call me cynical if you will, but it just looks like Apple have bought the naming rights to some collection/recycling centre open days with this announcement.

1 less PC in the world today :P

I recycled a computer today for a warm fuzzy feeling! Well maybe just to not feel so bad about my longer history of sending them off to land fill...

Seven Hills was the closest to me (and not that close, but I was headed for Parramatta anyway), they had a container sized trailer/bin thing and it was only about 1/4 full I reckon and I had about 4 guys all run over to grab the 1 PC out of my boot! So not too busy.

Felt like a bit of a half hearted effort by Apple, but better than nothing I guess.

Had a fling today... though not the flings we one track minded bohemians have on Wednesdays.
Big collection site in Artarmon - run by Ku-Ring-Gai Council.

Spot the the Classic Hull...

10:30 AM - a nice big pile of CRTs - ready for recyc - and there were seperate piles for towers and naked logicboards... but they get a bit funny if you walk around with a camera...
