You'd need to get yourself qualified at the training sessions;

You need to do the Hardware certifications: http://www.apple.com/au/training/certifications/

Do that, and you shouldn't find much trouble getting a job as a tech ripping apart Macs

The source material is what is online.

There a few different courses that you will have to complete a certain quota of to be a qualified technician. These require completion of controlled exams held at particular times of the year by Apple. Plus remember it is a paid qualification. I can't recall the exact cost of each component but i believe from memory its a 4 figure number.

And don't think it's easy, as the hands on exam where they give you a machine thats broken and you have to diagnose it (can be tricky as). Not to mention the fellow watching will be very picky. By the handling of the machine and tools used.

ACDT and ACPT is the two certifications I had held at one point. But never renewed them and only done them as the company I worked for at the time had to get a number of people qualified relating to a contract they got. With those certifications you could service and desktop or portable machine (as well as order parts and talk to TAC @ Apple). Not to mention see all the kb articles that are for tech eyes only. And of course see all the tech pdf guides for repairing various machines

I see them pop up quite often - service centers are always looking for competent staff to handle the load (more Macs sold, more Macs to fix!)

I've been posting around abouts a similar question. As I have a family to support the big question for me is: What are the dollars like? I am in need of a career change that takes me indoors without excessive amounts of heavy lifting. Macs are up my alley. Am I looking at $40K as a newb (with the certificates) at a reseller?

That's abought roughly what a newbie would get (35k-45k) working full time (40 hour weeks). The more senior ones get around 50k

People tend to be a little confused about this whole thing.

• There is no hands-on/practical exam - all computerised multiple answer questions.

• 3 exams to become fully certified. You need 10.4 Help Desk Support, and then Portable and Desktop, although these can be done separately (ie. Help Desk + Portable - can fix notebooks only).

• There IS Apple training that you can do, but it is optional (i just winged the 3 exams without any study). Most people should really do the training, as I'd been doing the work for a long time, and had it pretty solid.

• Exams are done through Thomson Prometric, and not Apple. You can do these exams at one of many locations worldwide. My total cost for becoming certified was under $500, but you need to do it again every year (simpler open book exams, but they still attract a cost). Needs to be said however, that simply getting certified means nothing, as you will still need to get work with a service provider before you can order any parts, or work on machines without voiding warranty (this is an important one).

We have an opening for a service job at Streetwise at the moment actually:

I've heard that you can't get practical training from Apple any longer. Is that true?

I got accredited a while back and went for training at Apple when it was over in French's Forest. BTW I'm now off doing something else and haven't renewed my accreditation.

Like wise here. Done directly with Apple, certified with them. And did the hands on prac. All required at the time to pass.

Guess it's changed in recent years.

Apple would love you to believe that, but it's always been the same. Apples training is and was optional.
