News, News, News, and More News #43

Apple has spat out a few things in the time since the last news post. First is some new Get a Mac ads, which are genuinely funny. I laughed at my computer when I watched the "Gift Exchange" ad. There's also a new security update that should be in your software update, check out what it contains over at Apple's info page.

You know how Universal are getting a cut of every Zune sold, based on the fact all MP3 players have stolen music, which in the record companies magical fantasy fairy land, entitles Universal to a piece of the pie? Well news is the iPod is Universal's next target.

If you're into Aperture, it's worth taking a listen to the latest Inside Aperture podcast. Bill Frakes is a photographer for Sports Illustrated and he takes us through his Aperture workflow.

MacWorld has the latest Core 2 Duo notebooks from Apple and benchmarks them. No surprises that they're faster, but they aren't that much faster.

MYOB has announced AccountEdge 2007, which is now a universal binary. Hooray for that.

Remember that woman who decided to fund her MacBook Pro purchase by getting advertisers to laser engrave their logos on the lid of the machine? Well she did that and has the MacBook Pro and it actually looks quite unique.

An Apple store in Berlin has a cool window display that involves motion sensing displays that follow your actions past the glass to look like an iPod ad. Check the video out to take a look.

AUSOM are having a raffle at their monthly meeting which takes place on the 2nd of December at Box Hill TAFE. If you head down to the meeting this month, pay $5 for the raffle, you may win a shiny new black MacBook. More information on the meeting can be found on the AUSOM site, as well as more info on the raffle itself.

Dan's Data takes a look at the Edirol UM-1EX USB MIDI interface. I don't know much about MIDI, but the reviewer seems to like it for the price of $105 delivered.

Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), was asked by Apple to do a celebrity playlist for the iTMS. Kevin did it, with nicely detailed information on each track of his choosing. When it was given to Apple, they asked to cut it down, as they were too detailed, as usually, the celebrities don't write the descriptions themselves. So instead of cutting it down, he just didn't put it up on the iTMS and put it up on his blog instead.

Whilst not Mac related really, there's a bit of buzz on the forums about the Nintendo Wii (I have mine pre-ordered and only 7-and-a-half days left!), so I thought I'd mention that Arstechnica take a look at the Wii in their usual thorough fashion.

Want to run After Effects 7 on your Mac Pro or any Intel based machine? Good news is that with a few tips, it runs faster than on a Dual G5 2.5, even under Rosetta, in tests that Graham Jones over at Creative Cow has run.

Need some more storage in that Mac Pro? Well MaxUpgrades has a nice mod where you can place upto 4 extra drives in your Mac Pro, to make a total of 8.

Bah, I thought I might pop over to Box Hill TAFE to enter the raffle, until I read the website which states:

They're still selling tickets on the day apparently. According to the AUSOM mailing list:

Tickets are only $5.00 each. "Postal" orders have closed, but you can still purchase tickets at the December Main Meeting. Drawn 4pm December 2nd, 2006 at the AUSOM monthly meeting, Box Hill TAFE, Cnr Whitehorse & Elgar Rds, Box Hill. Results will be published in the February issue of AUSOM News and posted to the AUSOM website.
