Default Monday Morning News

Picture 12We all know that the news can be somewhat lacking on the weekends, due to the US blogosphere (which single-handedly generates most of the buzz anyway) being AWOL. So here's what you might have missed, as well as a couple of other bits

Things, the excellent Getting Things Done client for Mac, have 20% off until October 15th with the coupon code SCOTHINGS. Thanks to kurisu on the forums for the tip - with the Aussie frank as good as it is, now is an excellent time to buy.

...and if you've always wanted a way to sync Things between multiple computers, Dropbox has you covered. This isn't the first time people have managed to find a use for Dropbox - for example, you can use Dropbox to sync your 1Password keychains, Yojimbo, even PDF documents for your iPhone (thus converting it into an eBook reader). Who needs the Kindle now, huh?

In case you missed it, the ultimate Twitter client ever, Tweetie 2, was recently unleashed upon the App Store, and the iPhone Blog have a pretty thorough rundown. I'd love to see some metrics on exactly how many downloads Tweetie 2 actually gained over the weekend - hundreds of thousands? Millions, even? If one thing's for sure, Loren is undoubtedly sunbaking on a beach somewhere on the Gold Coast... because, you know, that's just what iPhone developers do once they've hit it big.

Another iPhone developer, another ranty App Store critique. This time, it's Gedeon from the Iconfactory speaking about how he's losing the faith. Tsk tsk Iconfactory - we love your apps, but your apparent lack of enthusiasm for the iPhone platform is getting us down, yo.

Apple are taking the world into another NAND flash shortage yet again, say AppleInsider. It's almost funny that a small-fry in the world electronics game can put the world into shortage. Apple's official stance on the matter? "Nom nom nom - I can haz NAND?"

Popular virtualisation tool VMWare Fusion was also updated to 3.0, now adding support for Windows7 Aero and Snow Leopard support. No, this doesn't mean that you can run Snow Leopard, but it does mean that you can migrate your existing PC into a virtualised environment with it's new Migration Assistant tool. Wait - isn't that also a Mac app? Try not to confuse the two.

Sidekick's all around the world (but primarily in the US) have been subject to a failure in redundancy. Apparently the companies who run the Sidekick servers somehow managed to lose a whole heap of data, and without backups, expect a whole lotta class actions coming their way any day now.

Macs. We love them. We know them. One to add to your Instapaper lists today is why Macs are still virus free, after all these years. "I think if it was easy to write a true virus for the Mac, it would have been done by now." - spot on, dude.

Adobe, the company that will bring you Flash-powered App Store apps with the release of Creative Suite 5, released Photoshop for iPhone. It's pretty basic, but the real kick in the pants is the fact that it's only available in the US App Store. If you've got a US iTMS account for those tasty promocodes you're good, otherwise you'll just have to get a US account if you feel like you're missing out.

Speaking of Apps, something a little closer to home is the fact that Officeworks now have their own iPhone app. It functions as a basic store locator, product information guide and more, but the one feature I feel it lacks is a buying system. 29 one-star ratings as of this post, but hey, it's free!

VMware Fusion 3 hasn't been released yet. Not for another fortnight.

It should also be pointed out that the creator of the Sidekick phones, Danger, were purchased by Microsoft a while back.

And they have been gaining a lot of press recently... for all the wrong reasons.

The hiptop platform is a fundamentally flawed design. While they were one of the first cloud-based solutions, it should be used as a backup not as EVERYTHING. If your device lost power, your info was not saved locally...it would simply re-sync from the cloud.

Pretty terrible if you're out of data coverage or they lose your backup.
