Hi guys.. im getting a bit panicky, I asked to interview a guy for my website and got all the equipment, microphones etc for use with skype/gizmo project to call and interview BUT I cannot for the life of my unblock/forward the necessary ports ...
i am new mac user and have DSL , a dynalink modem/router with a pc running from the usb connection on the router and the imac connects to an airport which is hooked up to the ethernet port on the router....

ive read lots of stuff about it and been through the guide on portforward.com many times but everything seems to lack info, am i mapping these ports to one IP address ? some people mention that i need an ingoing and an outgoing IP ?? where do these come from , do i need both ? and how does it effect the mix that i have a pc running off the router as well?
and finally what settings would have to be altered on the imac to make it all work

any help would be greatly appreciated.. im really really stuck on this one, it just makes my mind boggle!!

In Airport Admin Utility, check that your Airport Base station is set to Bridge mode. Bridge mode essentially makes the Airport act as an imaginary cable to your router. It's possible your Airport is currently acting as a second router, distributing a new set of IP addresses (typically something like 10.0.1.1).

Once you are sure you are getting your IP number from the modem and not the Airport, connect to your modem/router's web administration page (typically something like http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.254 - you can find the actual address in System Preferences > Network > Airport > TCP/IP -- it is the address after the word "Router").

Once you're logged into the modem's website you should be able to find a port forwarding page, or Firewall NAT page, etc - look around until you find it. Then all you have to do is enter your machine's IP address (found in System Prefs) and the port that you want to forward.

It might be an idea to Google the modem (what model is it anyway?) and check that it supports port forwarding before anything else.

Good luck - let us know how you go.

edit: attached a picture of my router's setup so you can see how easy the last step is.

ok, in airport admin im looking for the bridging stuff, im under the "network" tab
and the closest i can find to what you described is the tick box for "Distribute IP addresses" its currently ticked and just below that is a drop down list which is set on "use 10.0.1.1 addressing"

the other two options in the list are 172.16.1.1 addressing or 192.168.1.1 addressing, would i be write in guessing i have to change it to the 192 addressing as that seems to be what routers use??

Yep, in Network, uncheck the Distribute box.

In Internet, ensure the settings are
Connect using: Ethernet
Configure: Using DHCP

the router/modem is a dynalink rta100+ , i logged in , added nat rules/port forwards for
6881-6889 (torrent) and 443 (gizmo project) and the skype range which i cant remember offhand but they are mapped to 192.168.1.5 which is the computers IP , i saved this and restarted everything and loaded gizmo project and it stopped at "Starting agent" and stayed there and killed the internet connection .. very weird, couldnt browse till i restarted all my equipment .. and azureus seemed to have a similar effect..

ill repeat the process and check everything..

ok torrents are running like a dream, and azureus let me check which ports were open so i know the mapping worked , thanks to snax ive now seen torrents get a GREEN smiley icon in azureus which i have never seen in 6 months..

only problem is..gizmo project still wont get past "starting agent" and in fact.. stops my connection altogether and i get a yell from dad who uses the pc which runs off the same router, his dies as well , they come back on after i turn off the router/modem .. i dont understand how a request to the router can fudge it like this, azureus would occaisonally do this before i did this port mapping.. i cant help but wonder if theres another port i need open besides 443 for Gizmo project ? any mac gizmo users out there???
