Post

Hi all,
I have just switched to the mac os after many frustrating years with XP.

Just a few questions.

1. Can someone give me advice re: any books/resources that are useful for someone who is new to the Mac interface. I am getting the hang of using Mac os but at times I am finding it hard to do simple tasks.

2. Which web browser is better. Firefox or Safari?

3. I have had crashes already! This happened when I was updating my mac and whilst I was using address book. I have received the latest updates.

Anyway, will keep on plodding along and I am sure I will have a good experience using my 12" powerbook

Book - The missing manual..... be sure to get the version that is suited to the os your running.

I use firefox because its better for my online banking but both are good.

i have had 2 crashes since i got my PB, turns out i had faulty ram. i have found a few programs to not like 10.4 much... still waitiing on updates for those programs.

stayfrosty - welcome to the good side

You'll also find many answers in this appletalk forum - appletalk is a great resource and is the home of many who have asked similar questions in the past.

The "search" function is your friend!

Enjoy.

Run the Apple Hardware test (comes on the DVDs/CDs with your machine) over the machine if it's brand new just to be sure there's no probs with the RAM, Drive, logic board, etc.

If it's brand new and there is a prob best to get it replaced (if its within 14 days of purchase) otherwise you'll have to wait for parts to be replaced, etc as they wont give you a new machine after 14 days only replace parts under warranty.

http://www.macosxhints.com/
http://www.osxfaq.com/

These are two greats sites for learning and tips.

osxfaq.com is specially good for learning UNIX.

I would have a read if these websites.

I recommend firefox for the PC but Safari for the mac. I find firefox sluggish on mac os x then again it might be cause I have almost 15 extensions.

As everyone has noted, yes welcome to good side.

I switched about 12 months ago and to be honest, OS X and the whole mac experience is so worthwhile books are nice but experience is the key.

I have found a couple applications that make the experience even better still:

1. Pathfinder, http://www.cocoatech.com/pf.php its like having the XP start bar and then some

2. Omni Outliner, https://store.omnigroup.com/cgi-bin/WebObje...nt%3fstore=main great for the whole ideas generation thing.

The MS Office suite is good too and to be honest I prefer it to the Win version, perfect compatiability.

All the best, you have made a great choice.

Cheers,
youngma

Safari in my opinion
Some will claim firefox is is faster but i dont see that
for me when it comes to chooseing an app 80% of my descision comes down to interface.
Safari wins there by along way.i havent seen any reason to move to firefox as it doesnt really seem to offer anything safari doesnt
iSlayer is online now
