We had a blackout in our house for an hour or so this afternoon.

I just noticed now that the date on our MDD PowerMac has been reset to 1/1/1970!

I thought that was very odd - isn't there a battery that keeps that sort of info current despite the Mac being switched off?

If so, is it a sign that the battery needs replacing? Or something else?

Mine always does this if the power goes off while it's asleep. It's not a flat battery in my case - it holds the date when it's switched off and disconnected from the wall - and I don't know why it happens.

Set the date properly, and then try shutting the machine down normally, unplugging it and leaving it for about a minute or so (preferably 5 minutes), and then try powering back up and see if its got the correct date still. If it does, your machine's fine. If it says 1970 again, its new battery time. It takes a 3.6v half-AA lithium battery, which you can get at Dick Smith's.

Thanks guys - I tried your suggestion LCGuy and the date was retained, so all seems fine!
