External Hard Drive, Backup

I have a MacBook and a LaCie external hard drive - the "rugged" orange one.

Am I able to set this up as a time machine back up drive but also use it on PC's?

If so, how do I do it, keep it simple please!

Also, should I use the USB or Firewire? (not sure if it's 400 or 800)

Thanks in advance!

Firewire is faster in real life terms.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to use it for both, unless you partition it, making it into two separate drives, one for mac and one for windows.
