getting mail to work with hotmail/bigpond

i got my first mac today a 24" imac. Its a bit overwhelming as everything is still very foreign to me and i dont know whats really going on. I think it will be a very smart move from my pc.
question is,

can i get my hotmail to work through mail? if so could i get some help?

also i have tried to set up my bigpond through mail and it was all good till i hit get mail and it asks for my password i enter it and it keeps telling "the pop sever mail.bigpond.com rejected the password for my (username)". i am entering the exact same password and cant understand why its not working, so im wondering if anyone might have some help with this also?

thanks.

i dont think hotmail will work with mail, something to do with its settings.

ring bigpond and they will sort your password issue for you.

You need to be a Hotmail Plus user (i.e. pay a fee) to access the settings to set up your email client, like Mail.app, to receive Hotmail emails.

That's right.. gone are the days of being able to enjoy free hotmail access via mail.app...

It bites, but this is big business being bastards...

Under mail> preferences > accounts > account information have you entered your full email address as your user name for bigpond "username"@bigpond.net.au
Incoming mailserver set as mail.bigpond.com
Outgoing mailserver(SMTP) set as mail.bigpond.com

Haven't used hotmail for a long time, can you set it to forward you hotmails to your bigpond account? Better still get a gmail account.

download a plugin for mail called httpmail - it should let mail access your hotmail messages.

Works OK, but sometimes doesn't work for newer accounts.

In case you were wondering, the reason why Hotmail does this, is because they purely rely on webads, and by using a desktop mail application, you are avoiding these ads!

(Note I used capitalisation in this post )

I think if you also log on to MSN messenger it gives you new mail notifications.

Not anymore it doesn't... I read not long ago that the authentication that hotmail is implementing is not compatible with httpmail and the developer isn't going to put any effort in and try and make it work....
