Question Speaker output has a red light??

does anyone know or has had this problem before..
My speakers on my mac are not working and there seems to be a red light comming out where you put the speaker plug for when you want to use external speakers.. so the speakers on the mac dont work but when i connect other speakers it works fine.. i dont understand why other speakers work and not the ones on my mac?

My guess:

System preferences > sound > output > select line out or internal speakers, not digital out.

i had this problem. Search the forums. I can't remember where, but it has to do with the computer thinking the headphone jack is still occupied, hence the red light, and hence the computer speakers not making any sound...

The red light means your mac is broken and is burning up internally. It could catch fire at any moment now.

Or the optical port is active. Your headphone jack on your mac doubles as a toshlink connection which allows you to transmit optical sound into an amp via toshlink. Go to Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup and check your output is set correctly.

The mini optical plug that would go into the socket in place of a regular headphone jack is slightly longer, so it's possible that there's a switch that's become stuck in the socket, making it think you've got a mini optical cable plugged in. You didn't stick your speaker plug in too hard did you?

This issue occurs when the electrical contact bends or snaps inside the audio out port. Most of the time, it can be fixed by bending the contact back with a needle, or very small screwdriver. Some of the time however, the port itself will need to be replaced.

What sort of machine is it?

There's a red light district inside your Macbook. Open it up for a good time (use rubber gloves).

This happens all the time on my iMac G5.
There's a little switch in the port that gets stuck, I just use a toothpick and push it gently and then the light goes off and music to my ears

LMAO!

I have seen this red light on an Airport Express indicating that music is being streamed.

I had the same issue with my macbook, long story short… Apple replaced my logic board under warrantee because it was dodgy. That fixed the problem.

If it's under warrantee, take it into your nearest apple authorised repairer and get them to take a look at it, they should replace the logic board free of charge.
