In the mean-time I will look at bit-torrenting 101...
Just re-checked it.
It's 175MB,I saved it as a .avi file and it plays but there are some serious syncing problems with pixellation, stalling etc.
Back to the drawing board and more post searching...

I can tell you what is happening:
You have downloaded a .torrent file (e.g. "legalcontent.XviD.torrent") that when finished will have a title that says "legalcontent.XviD.avi" (or something similar with a different file extension like .mkv or .mpg). Many torrent clients will download preferentially the first part of a file for the purpose of previewing and as the file you speak of is far from complete it, when played, will display all the issues you have described e.g. pixelation, sound sync problems the works. I can tell that you have looked at the .avi file that you have on your computer and it says "175MB" and it will be when it is finished but at the moment it is just 175MB of reserved space on your hard drive. When your torrent client has finished downloading it you will see that you will have two files; the original .torrent file and the .avi video file. A .torrent file is never going to be a video however you try to rename it. You will have to wait until your torrent client tells you it has finished downloading the file (and all of them have a status bar).
Note to all the people who say this is dodgy: While torrenting is often used for dodgy content the question I am answering is not "how do I download dodgy content?", nor is it "where do I find dodgy content?" or "what sites can I find dodgy content on?". The basic question is: "how does Bittorrent work? I don't understand". On the strength of that I am answering.
