MacBook RAM PANIC!!

Hi,
I've just tried to install a 512mb RAM chip I got of the boards here into my MacBook (Core duo 1.83Ghz). Prior to trying this it had a 256mb and a 512 chip installed for a total of 768mb.

I installed the new chip (replacing the 256 chip) and when I turned on the machine all I got was a fan and the sleep light came on (solid, not flashing).

After this I removed the new chip, the machine fired up fine.

I added the new chip again and the machine started fine but only registered 512 (not the full gig over two chips).

I then tried the original configuration (768) and the machine wouldn't turn on. You press the power button and all you get is a flashing sleep light and a fan!

Nothing I do now seems to help. Any configuration of chips just does the same- no boot, just a fan and an annoying flashing sleep light!!

I have to resubmit a thesis soon and this is really not helping! Plus, financially going to a mac shop just isn't going to happen!

SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON HERE!!!!

OK,
I was tempted to pull this thread but for the benefit of others who are as stupid as me in the future...

Turns out the chips weren't seated fully. You read it right. The chips I was installing weren't pushed in all the way.

In my defence, you need to push those buggers bloody hard to get them in- significantly harder than I am comfortable with when dealing with electronic devices... but as is pretty clear above I was in panic mode and gave them a right shove for a satisfying 'thunk' as one snapped into place...

Disaster averted.

Thanks Jeremy/Purana, I didn't refresh before posting my reply. You were dead on.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Thom. Not from a MacBook's perspective, but in general RAM can be a real... pita... well, come to that... I recall a PCI card being real tight on my TAM too... I guess when you don't deal with these things on a daily basis, you are never quite sure how much pressure you can apply...
