I have a 500 gig FW ext HD (mac OS extended journaled) partioned in two,100 gig for backups-the rest for movies ect.

Under ownership and permitions I marked the 100 gig partion no acces to stop our kid's poking around in our backups,after a meltdown a couple of weeks ago and they trashed all the files.

And now I cant get acces to it, it doesn't show up anywhere but disk utility and I can't restore acces permisson's from there..

In disk utility it is greyed out, and I can repair or verify the disk,(it briefly shows up in orange whils't the repair is happening)-there is no prob reported.

Restart didn't find it, and the other partion is fine.

How do I find it to restore permissions? I poked around in search,didn't spot an answer.

Also I am using the same ext drive for our time machine backups on our new mac,can I safely change the name of the time machine file or will it start a new backup history?

I'm pretty sure that this is what you are looking for. Help. Can't Mount Ex HDD (You could read the rest of the thread also but Currawongs solution should be what you are looking for and work for you)
