Question Antivrius if running Office 2004?

Hi I'm new to Macs and have just installed Office 2004 (no windows).
Do I need to run anti virus software? Mac user at work advised I should.
If so which one? I don't want to run Nortons ever again

Thx YMe

There's really no need to at the moment. Most anti-virus software for Macs is bloatware.

Do NOT install Norton

If you're really skeptic, just download a freeware copy of ClamXav:

i run an anti-virus just so i don't accidently pass on a virus to anyone i know that still uses a pc (slowly declining).

it's not really for your protection but its just being a nice guy and not infecting those who don't have any sense

edit: i use clamXav too ... can't go past free stuff.

Sadly, the latest critical Office vulnerabilities affect Office:Mac as well. See bulletin MS08-014. The bad news is that a lot of AV scanners have trouble picking up the exploit. Your best bet is to upgrade Office, urgently. And not to run your day-to-day desktop with admin rights!

Did I mention that you should upgrade Office asap and not run your Mac as admin?

Cheers
Steffen.

Smile Thanks

Thanks to everyne for your advice.

Sorry for the late acknowledgement but Apple replaced my new "old" MacBook this week as it was a dodgy one & have just received my brand spanking new replacement!

Can I ask why I shouldn't run my Mac as admin?

Screw the PC users, let them protect THEMSELVES from their OWN Word viruses.

Why should Symantec sell them a (legitimate) copy. Then sell you a bogus one based on the guilt you might give a friend who probably already owns antivirus a virus? Its fucking nuts.

If they don't protect themselves then they should get what's coming to them.

Interesting to note that we had a Quicktime security update a few days ago.

More interesting if you look at who was credited with discovering the flaws.
