The "Switchers learning Game"

Okay. Seeing as how we have heaps of people switching to Mac, and joining this forum, I thought I might be able to come up with a way for them to get answers to silly little questions, that they might be embarrassed to ask, or feel don't warrant starting a new thread.

so here's a little game designed to help "newbr'y", help other "newby's" to find their way around their new Mac!

Here are the rules.

1. Posters posing questions, must be switchers or new to Mac for less than 12 mths. (this can be reasonably flexible, so long as your a learner,)

2. Post to be worded as follows.

The poster below me is new to Mac, and can already tell me how to............?

3. The next poster will answer the question, and go on to post his own question, ie the poster below me etc etc......

4. Regulars/forum leaders/moderators, only to interveen if answer is INCORRECT. And then to invite the next poster to post the correct answer.

Here we go. Something simple.

"The poster below me" is new to Mac and and can already tell me how to prevent the finder from giving a warning before emptying the trash.

To prevent the finder from giving a warning before emptying the trash, you use the keyboard shortcuts Command + Option + Shift + Delete.

Something else simple: The poster below me is new to mac, and can already tell me how to turn off DVD Player launching when I put in a DVD.

In Disk Utility, highlight the partition and click "mount"

The poster below me is new to Mac, and can already tell me how to hide the dock (I forgot the command )

To automagically hide and show the dock, it's Command + Shift + D.

The person below is new to mac and can already tell me how to duplicate a DVD created in iDVD.

To duplicate a DVD created in iDVD, download MacTheRipper, do a full rip, burn the Video_TS to a blank DVD with your burn app of choice (Toast, Burn)

The person below is new to mac and can already tell me how to switch default Mail app.

This is incorrect IF you are running Leopard. +SHIFT+D shows a finder window of your desktop folder. To show/hide your dock in Leopard you will want to use the shortcut keys of +option+D.

This is incorrect. Because iDVD does not put any encryption on the burnt DVD, MacTheRipper does not need to be used. The disc can be easily duplicated just by whacking it in, opening Toast, and clicking Copy. (Thats if you have Toast, otherwise you'll have to use Disk Utility or another burning app to copy the disc.

Since I've already posted I'll answer the last Q.

To set the default Mail client in OS X you need to open up the built in Mail app. Then go to the Mail>Preferences menu where you can change the default app in the General section under Default email reader.

The person beneath me is new to Mac and can already tell me how to make a compressed .zip file. (I know the answer but some dont )

It's actually control+click not option.

Anyways, back to Nathans question at hand:

"The person beneath me is new to Mac and can already tell me how to have the padlock appear at the top of my screen so i can lock my screen (useful for work) hint: think keychains"

Bent the rules entirely actually, the thread is desisigned to encourage new mac users to explore their operating system and assist each other.

But i guess we have no option but to move on to your question.

to safely remove an external USB hard drive, right click on the volume you would like to eject and click "eject"

the person below me is new to mac and can already tell me how I can easily change a web page to index.html but it still looks like "home" on the website (change file name) in iWeb.
