Ahh the new title explains it. The DVD's that come with Mac's are compatible only with the Mac they were sold with. If you want Leopard for your PowerBook you'll need to go and buy it

Yes that's right. You buy an iMac, it comes preloaded with Leopard and you get restore discs for that machine.

A retail copy of Leopard will be needed if you want to install it on your PowerBook.

Yep, technically the discs that come with your computer are "restoration discs". Could be a form of piracy protection, you'll need to buy OSX off the shelf to install it on your PowerBook.

The iMac disks won't work on a PowerBook because they are iMac disks

...hmm, Apple is misleading people.

On the new Leopard discs that come with your machine, they say "For Mac Computers". This, of course, leads me to assume that the disc can be used with any computer, when in fact it can only be used with the computer that it came with.

They used to say "PowerBook", or had machine-specific discs, ie a disc that said PowerBook was not going to work in an iBook.

Good thing the Leopard Drop-Ins are generic, hey

Except Drop-Ins are annoying to install? Doesn't it require Tiger to be installed first, then Leopard?

bennyling, don't you mean the Leopard upgrade disks? The standard grey disks that come with Macs have the model name on them.

There are workarounds for model specific install discs that involve a firewire cable, but this won't work in this instance, because the Imac is Intel and the Powerbook is PPC.

Leopard is universal.

Currawong, what I'm saying is that the Restore Discs that come with your Mac (the grey ones) seem to be generic, ie. they work on all Macs, not only the Mac that they came with.

As far as I'm aware, the Leopard Drop-Ins are full versions of Leopard, and they DO NOT require you to have a pre-installed version of Tiger.

Confusing, I know.

Although the discs are Universal, they are model specific and won't run on another model - i.e. you cannot upgrade your PowerBook running Tiger, to Leopard, by inserting your brothers discs he received with his 2-week old MacBook

Really?

So even though they say "For Mac Computers" they actually mean "For the Mac that this Disc came with?"

Ha, Cool.
