[Merged] .mac (dotmac) account, is it worth the money?
I have a trial account at present, but I'm wondering if a .mac account is any good?
For web email I already have gmal, for uploading photos Phanfare has a mac version. Have I missed anything?
cheers,
btw, I just love my new iMac. After many years with windows I've finally made the break, buying a macbook at the end of the month also.

Once you have 2 macs you will appreciate the ability to sync Safari bookmarks, mail accounts, iCal and Address Book between them.
If you use an IMAP email account (for example your @mac account, but many ISP's also have IMAP) the addition of .mac means you can use mail/cal/address book from either computer without any need to manually transfer email/cal/addressbook and all should be exactly the same on both computers. I think it is brilliant.
Oh, and I also like the way Backup schedules my backups.
Search MacTalk for ".mac" or "dotmac" and you will find many similar threads with passionate views pro and against .mac

Just a note, searching for ".Mac" doesn't work, as the leading full stop is ignored, even by Google. You'll just get results with any threads with the word "Mac" in them. I've changed the topic title so it's findable in the future, however.

I'm impressed at the speed with which replies are made, thank you.
I watched the video help on .mac re. photocast. However, Photocast does not appear in the menu of iPhoto as the help video says it should.
any ideas?
just playing around with it.
Sorry, I should search the forum before asking silly questions

I have had mine for 3 years. Its finally getting more reliable and decent iDisk space means I am using it allot now. The real reason I keep it is multiple macs and offsite backup.

Silly question, but are you using iLife '08? Also, what computer are you using?

It may not be cheap but its just so simple. You cant beat the intergreation wtih OS X and iLife apps. Easily worth it in my opinion

I've had it from the beginning. The first time it came up for renewal I almost didn't bother. However I now find it useful as I sync the two macs that I have and use the ilife apps. There may be alternatives, I find dot mac the simplest.

I've had it for almost 5 years now and there have been times when I had doubts but now I use it as an ftp site for heavy file distribution every single day. Accessing the idisk through a ftp program like Transmit seems to make it a lot faster... I think it's worth it especially if you travel a lot.

I'm finally thinking of signing up - we made a nifty little page(s) with iWeb but be buggered if we can send it to our Optus Cable space we supposedly have - just want to simply publish it and be done - ah well..
