iMac G5 random Shutdowns

Hi All,

I have been having problems with my iMac G5, with it randomly powering off by itself.

I took it in for Service on Saturday, and looks like it is the Power Supply. Looking like I should get it back by Wednesday.

Hopefully thats all it is...what do you guys reckon?

Lucky I had the extended warranty, out of curiousity how much would a power supply cost anyway?

G5 iMacs had lots of power supply issues so it should be fine once you get the new one installed.

I had the same problem with my iMac G5

It should cost nothing, if its the right model, it will be covered under this repair extension program

Good luck with it, if it fits the right model number, make sure you get it covered under this and don't pay anything for it

Good luck!

Whatever it is, let us know because my wife's G5 iMac is exhibiting the same problem, just every now and then *poof!* it powers itself off for no apparent reason…

Leave it for a couple of minutes, switch back on and it goes for a couple of days without a hitch, then*poof* and its gone again

It's a Power Supply Unit fault and affected lots of Rev B. iMac G5s. Apple has a repair extension program running to get it fixed for free. It won't go away - I had to live with it for a couple of months.

When I took it in, the guy checked the Serial Number and said straight away, that I was covered. So it must be in the Repair Extension Program.

I was watching EyeTV and then just out of no where, it powered off. At first I thought mayby a fuse blew, but then it turned straight back on and then 5 minutes later it did the same thing.

I ran a Hardware Test and suprisingly it didn't power off for a full hour, while it was checking, and it came back all good.

Then when I logged back in it powered off again.

Mine was a Rev B as well!

At least I know it is a common problem and all should be ok!

Yeah, sometimes it can do it every few minutes, sometimes it can go for a week or more without it shutting down.

But you need to get it fixed.

Goodbye, do you know of any AASP on the Sunshine Coast or do I need to go to Brisbane?

Oh, and is this the program you are talking about?

It was really annoying too while it was shutting down, sometimes 4 times a day then fine for a week

When I got mine back the reseller jammed my imac in the box around the wrong way - pushed it in so hard it crushed the styrofoam

You would think an apple reseller would know how the imac goes in the box, they must have had to push it in very hard, its fairly dense styrofoam

Idiots

Well theres my rant for the day, the computer it fine now

Didn't read you have Applecare - when I investigated fixing the PSU I think it was going to be like $200 or so to get it fixed if my memory serves me - so its not a huge repair, you could do it yourself

But then the repair extension program came out

ninja: I took mine to a place in Brisbane, as far as I know there is nowhere on the coast that does it. It's a nuisance because you have to take your machine to them, leave it for a couple of days and go and pick it up again.

I've been told by Tuesday, Wednesday at the latest the machine will be ready to be collected.

Just a matter of getting the part in apparently. Not too hard to fix!
