Mac OS X Server in a Windows World
Greetings All!
Coming from a mac background, and administrating mac systems since At Ease. I have found myself now at a school, all Windows machines. We want to put in a server to administrate DropBoxs, Web, User Accounts, etc. I know OS X server and love using it, but I need some advice in installing an Xserve, OS X server only to admin Windows Machines...
Can you serve Printers, user accounts and Application control (restrict certain apps) , well for Windows XP machines?
Would this be wise? I am being pressured to go down the Novel route...
Any ideas, thoughts?

I am surprised they want to pursue Novel at all.

One of the bigger American sites like MacOSXHints that has a dedicated server section may be a good place to post questions like this although there are some guys here like macdave etc that can probably answer any questions too.

I think OS X Server can replicate Active Directory to a certain degree but works best when coupled with it.

You can happily do everything from a Novell perspective, no need for a OSX server. You'll be setting up an OES (Open Enterprise Server) and then using zenworks to manage your machine life cycle, all the apps. Edirectory will store all the user details, app information etc. Nice easy solution.

Thanks for your comments guys! , I came to the conclusion today that is would be best if an Xserve complimented a Windows Server, but it's likely that I will explore a Novel solution.
Possibly a IBM server running Novel Server

I have another vote for Novell and OES (its not really netware anymore). In the last 12 months that we have bought it into our environment it has done nothing but save us money. EDirectory is fair superior to AD and in the end will replace your need for AD. Other novell only tools like salvage, iprint, ifolder identity manager to name a few are quite simple to set up and very easy to use and add value to your network.
In a Microsoft centric office like ours I would argue that novell paid for itself in time and recovery issues in just a matter of months. We really cant wait for OES2 to be released which should happen soon, and with it come XEN vertalisation enviroment.

With a bit of research and testing you could look at Linux running Samba.
Look into Linux with LAMP!
I think this would be a good cheap solution for you to investigate. And I think it can handle mix inviorments quite well too.
