Airport Card won't work with eMac

Hi all,

I have a bit of a problem with my 700MHz eMac and an AirPort card (original). The eMac refuses to recognise the card, it is the right card for it, it's firmly in the slot (I believe) and the antenna's hooked into it.

The card worked in my PowerMac G4 400MHz - it showed up etc.
But with the eMac, when I go to System Profiler and click on 'Airport' it says: "No information found."

I bought the card over a week ago for $115, so I'm a bit miffed if it's broken already.

I just "fixed" a friend's emac who had this problem. They hadn't pushed the card in properly - it takes a little bit of force to get it in properly.

If you can pull it out easily, I'd suggest that it's not pushed in properly. BTW don't try pushing it in or pulling it out until your eMac is shut down.

How far in must it be pushed? It seems to fit in neatly now...

OK. I pulled it out & put it in again. No change. I can't get it to go any further in.

As forgie said it takes a reasonable amount of force to seat the card. I always found it easiest to put the emac against something so that it wouldn't move as I seated the card. You will feel it move in a couple of mm when it finally does push into the slot.

It seems to go in a tiny bit further, but still nothing.
I followed Apple's instructions to the letter.

Shine a torch in the Airport slot, and check the pins - is there any sign of damage? The eMac's outer shell can be taken apart fairly easily - you undo the hex screws on the back shell, disconnect power switch, and undo the Phillips head screws on the rear bezel of the screen.

This will allow you to remove the front plastic panel, and provide better access to the Airport slot.

Whoa - I don't want to dismantle the eMac - that's going too far...

I don't know what's up with it. The pins seem fine.

Just to make sure, when you push it in, there should be no real resistance until you hit the socket, then you should push it for about 6-7mm with firm resistance, then it will be clearly "in".

Now I think of it, I have seen this in 3 different macs - one was an emac that was the result of bad installation, the other two were in powerbooks where the card had somehow come loose.
