Powerbook to airport express to optus adsl modem port forwarding

I'm using transmission as my client and have tried to follow various people's instructions on setting up port forwarding. Unfortunately, the best speeds I've had downloading so far is a pathetic 11kps. Can anyone tell me how to set up port forwarding, in a step by step nature so that it works through my powerbook, airport express and optus adsl modem using transmission and OSX???

many thanks,
Roo

First of all which modem are you using if you have the standard optus one then follow the instructions below

go to this website and select your modem the dsl 302g i think it is for the standard modem

http://www.portforward.com/english/r...-302Gindex.htm

or this one to select your router model

http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

Then follow this instruction

How do I Port Forward?
The process is fairly straightforward.
If your modem is directly connected to your computer, and you have the OS X firewall running (which is highly recommended in this case), you'll need to open a port in the firewall.
1. Open Transmission. go to preferences and enter a number for the port. This should be any number above 45000. Lets use 50001 for now. Then quit Transmission.

2. Open System Prefs >> Sharing >> Firewall. Click "New." In the "Port Name" pop-up menu, select Other, and fill in the settings as follows:

TCP Port Number(s): the port you chose in step 1 - eg 50001.
UDP Port Number(s): the port you chose in step 1 - eg 50001.
Description: Transmission

3. Click OK.

you can skip this step if you want (below)

If your modem is connected to your computer via a router (wired/wireless) you'll need to open a port in the router. In this case, it is probably OK to disable the OS X firewall, as you are already being protected by the router. To disable the firewall, open System Prefs >> Sharing >> Firewall. Click Stop.

1. Find out what your IP address is. You can find your computer's IP address (on Mac OS X) by going to System Prefs >> Network, double-clicking on your connection (for instance, Built-in Ethernet), and clicking the TCP/IP tab. It's probably something like 192.168.1.100, or 10.0.1.2.

You can skip this if you want (below)
2. Open Transmission. go to preferences and enter a number for the port. This should be any number above 45000. Lets use 50001 for now. Then quit Transmission.

3. Go into your router configuration screen. Normally this is done via your web browser using the address 192.168.0.1 etc. Apple's Airport uses an application called 'Airport Admin Utility' to configure it.

4. Find the port forwarding (sometimes called port mapping) screen. While the page will be different for each router generally you will enter something similar to the following:
For 'Application' type Trans
For 'Start Port' and 'End port' type 50001
For Protocol, choose Both
For IP address, type in your IP address you found in Step 1.
Tick Enable.
Click save settings.

For more comprehensive instructions specific to your router, go to http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm and choose your router from the list.

How do I know if I've done it right?
1. Open Transmission.

2. Then go to this website, https://www.grc.com/x/portprobe=50001

Replace the '50001' part of the URL with what ever port you have forwarded.

If you get 'Stealth', or 'Closed', the you haven't forwarded correctly.

If you get 'Open', then you have successfully port forwarded!

cheers
jeremy

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I've followed your instructions to the letter but I'm still getting a "closed" on the port probe. Do I need to open the port on the optus adsl router aswell as on my airport express??

In short, yes. You need to go into your router settings and set it up to forward the port in question to your computer's IP address. I'm surprised that the airport express intermediary actually makes any difference at all.

When I type my routers IP address into my browser, I don't get any options I can tamper with... only a system test, diagnostics and change password option. There is no where to change any of the port settings.... Do I need to upgrade the firmware on my adsl router?? Is there a different router I can buy which is compatible with optusnet and will also give me better performance\more options if my current one won't play ball???
I spend a fortune on adsl and have been very disappointed with the speed I get.

You should get a page asking you to login to your router. Are you using 192.168.1.1? (just like that, no HTTP or WWW or anything).

Failing that, try connecting directly to your router via ethernet cable with airport switched off and see if that changes anything. It shouldn't in theory, but it may in practice.

Once you can login to your router (username and password both "admin"), follow the instructions here.

If you still can't login to your router you may need to upgrade its firmware or perhaps try 192.168.100.1 or 192.168.101.1 or 255.255.255.1 or 192.168.1.51 or 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.3.

10.1.1.1 will get me in direct communication with my router but it gives me minimal options. I'm just reading something that I googled that said if you press the reset button on the router three times than turn it off, it will reset and give me access to the original set-up screen. Hopefully this will work. I just tried all the IP addresses you gave me and none of them seemed to work however I'm yet to try them whilst directly connected to the router with airport turned off. Also, the page your suggesting seems very PCcentric but I'm counting on the information being relevent to us mac users...
Thanks heaps for your help so far, I'm gonna give it a rest and try again tomorrow with a clear head!!
Cheers,
Roo

don't let any seemingly pc-centricness fool you. It's just a matter of entering the details into the router itself. The user interface is stored on the router itself and looks a bit pc-like i guess.

Also something i discovered and should be highlighted is to not distribute your IP address in the AirPort Extreme. it ads another IP adress and trying to determine which is the one to get the ports forwarded to makes for alot of trouble. (Well it had me stumped anyway)
