I'm having issues on my G3 iBook.

I just installed OS Classic (9.2.2) from the restore CD. I chose to reboot into OS Classic from the OS X startup disk selecting utility. I'm using OS X 10.2.8 with the OS Classic system sitting on the same drive partition.

When I attempt to boot into OS Classic, after the happy mac logo appears, the disk icon with the flashing '?' appears shortly after. I can't seem to boot back into OS X or proceed booting to OS Classic.

I have tried an OS 9 Install CD (just to give it something to boot) and the boot proceedure causes the computer to restart. I assume that OS Classic can't interpret the OS X disk drivers.

I have tried booting from my OS 10.2.1 install disk and can't seem to be able to access any options that allow you to access boot options. I really don't want to re-format, as I have important data on my iBook.

If I can somehow manage to boot back into OS X, that would be great.

All help appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this works on G3 iBooks but try holding down 'Option' as you boot the machine - if it works it will come up with a screen where you can select which OS to boot.

This only works if the OSes are on different drives/partitions, I think.

Nup, it should show you all bootable systems on all bootable drives.

Edit: Oh and, yes, it does work for the G3 iBooks.

Don't the 'X' and '9' keys now have special meaning for this purpose at startup?

Hi.

I just gave it a go.
It shows the disk, but it still won't boot into OS X

I found this on apple's support:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
and this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106697

When I hold down the 'X' key, it still proceeds to boot into classic then doesn't recognise the disk.

Bump.

Still Trying!

If I boot from any OS 9.x CD, I just get an error message "Unimplemented Kernel Trap" when it starts booting.

Is there are way that I can boot from an OS X install CD and access the startup disk options?

Keep the posts coming.

Sounds like the 'blessing' of your OS X and OS 9 installs on the same partition has become screwed. The OS 9.x installer usually installs a driver to the hard disk to make it work with OS 9 - unless you unchecked this. Although by default, installing OS X also installs an OS 9-compatible disk driver.

Certainly booting from an OS X Installer CD does give you the option to select a startup disk.

It's weird times like these I'd also reset your PRAM, and if no luck NVRAM under Open Firmware.

I recall having similar problems installin OS 9/X with an iBook 500 - it turned out it was a scratched CD.

My answer lies here.

I just had to spend one minute in Open Firmware re blessing my OS X system.

My Soul is Saved! Thank you all for your kind help.
