Hi all,

The 40gig HD in my 867mhz 12" PB has crapped out on me. Attempting to boot into Tiger results in the blinking folder OS? thing. With the Tiger disk, I'm only given the option to erase the hard drive and re-install the OS.

I'm looking for options to try to recover the data before wiping the HD and re-installing Tiger. Here are two I've thought about, maybe you guys can suggest other plans or give opinions:

(1) Remove HD, replace with a new (and larger, while I'm at it HD. Put the old HD in an external enclosure and try to extract the data.

(2) Use a live linux distribution to access the data on the HD. Move it onto a 160GB external firewire HD I already have.

With the first option, I'm not sure what type of HD I would need. I'm not familiar with UltraATA/100...Is this another name for IDE or if not, is it possible to use an IDE laptop HD as long as it fits?

With the second option, does a live distro exist for PPC processors?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's got some advice.

Regards,
Abraham

The problem has been fixed. I purchased a 100GB Samsung IDE hard drive, followed the pbfixit.com instructions to replace it and put the old hard drive in a USB2.0 enclosure which cost $9.

Using Macdrive on a PC with USB2.0 I recovered all the data.

On the powerbook I just reinstalled Tiger.

Unfortunately in the 3 months my powerbook has been lying dead, either the battery or charger, or charge controller has been compromised. It refuses to show charge percentages over about 34% and battery life appears considerably diminished.

It was purchased over 3 years ago in the USA, so no, it is way out of warranty.

Replacing an al powerbook's HD is not a very simple task and voids warranty. However, I'm confident that replacing the HD did not cause this battery issue.

[attachmentid=196]

It does seem quite strange...Why, at 3% it would not be charging, despite being connected to the charger...
