I've been getting terrible signal strengths on my powerbook lately, for example i'd have an imac w/ an airport sitting next to the powerbook, and the imac can pick up the AP, as the powerbook can't... Is it cos it's surrounded by the aluminium? or could it be a lose airport connection?

I think the dual antennas of all aluminium PB's are located behind the wider plastic part of the screen rim, so that's not the cause. However, the antenna was behind the LCD screen in the Ti books I believe, and this did result in poor reception.

The Macbook has a rubber strip for the antenna to get past the metal. I get better reception with the Mbp than I did with the 15" Pb.

I don't want to state the obvious, but have you checked the airport antenna plug thing is plugged? I had to with my 12" PB to fix its reception issues. Works fine now.

The antennas are behind the plastic bits of the sides of the Powerbook screens. You will notice them as they are on both side at the top when the screen is open in an upright position.

yeah, i went to ifixit.com and the instructions there aren't the same for my powerbook (they're for an older model it seems) where the airport card is in the battery component, whereas mine hasn't got anything like that
