Default DVD's not reading - CD's are ok

As a "new to Mac" user maybe this one is down to operator (or settings) error - not sure.
IMAC 20" with Snow Leopard upgrade - works 99% perfectly - the 1% problem I have is that it does not read (non music) DVD's such as photos or (heaven forbid) a "Basic Training for Mac OS X Leopard DVD I bought from the Apple re-seller.
Reads CD's of photos fine - just not DVD's.
Any thoughts, comments , suggestions would be appreciated

When you say it doesn't read... does it mount the disc, and then give a read/write error when you try to open something, or does it just spit the disc straight out?

There are no messages at all - it simply ejects the disc after (about 5-10 seconds) of trying.

The optical drive is most likely screwed, which is a common occurence on the slimline models that Apple uses.

If your iMac is still under warranty you could get it repaired, but chances are that the replacement will fail sooner or later too.
If you use your disc drive a lot, I highly suggest getting an external model, preferably "full size".

Bought new on 07-June-09 so it sounds like the the warranty is the next port of call and the next piece of fine print to read.

"Thank you" to cosmichobo and ~Coxy for the feedback

I had an identical prob after purchasing a new emac in 2003. Drive was replaced under warranty and is still going strong.
