Also if you look closely i think, that there is a colour screen thing going on in the background of the image... either that or they have new bluey, greeny backlight..... but that would need a multicoloured display???
anyway...looks nice... enough.. i dont care about the looks as much as the new features...

It seems pretty legit, look here for the actual link: http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/Sections...40717_COVER.jpg
Bit of a dissapointment as far as I can tell. Sure, it looks slimmer, a bit sleaker, and has the mini click wheel, but from what can be seen it has no color screen, no inbuilt radio, not an aluminium case and no variety of colors.
With regards to the backlight, its probably a standard one. The graphic design mob would have enhanced it for the cover, to make it look 'better'

Curse you, I was just coming to link the same pic..
I'm glad there's no radical differences, my own 20Gb iPod is only a couple of months old..

I adore that pic estoyloco. When I saw it weeks back I spent ages drooling over it.
I'm getting the new iPod (my first...) regardless and have been waiting for it. So I suppose my purchase won't be changed by its new features (or lack of)...but I certainly hope there is at least one surprise.

Looks can be deceiving on the cover of a mag or a web page, I've noted several people initially unimpressed by the iPod mini recounting their amazement once they have one in their hands - until specs - say Late Tues our time it will be an unknown. Off to Apple insider to check out their goss.

More to the point on the Newsweek site it says
Quote:
|
Lower price. The top-of-the-line iPod, holding 10,000 songs (40 gigs, as geeks will tell you), now costs $399. The lower-capacity model, with room for 5,000 songs (20 gigs), costs $299. That's a $100 price reduction for each. (There's no more 15-gig model.)
|
Given the Australian Apple site the current prices are 15Gb A$449, 20Gb A$598, and 40Gb for $A799 with the iPod mini at A$399
Current US iPod prices are respectively US$299, 399 & 499 with the mini at US$249
So using the similar price difference ratios (ignoring the exchange rate as the determinate) would give us 20Gb at between A$449 and A$479 and the 40 Gb between A$599 and A$639 a sizeable reduction.
Be interesting to see where Apple Australia sets the pricing. Lets hope they want to make us all happy.
Lets hope Australia iTms is not too far away.
Who is going to cover the Dire Straits song as "I want my my iPod please"

so the question is do i risk selling my current 20Gb and managing to pay only ~50 to ~80$ to upgrade it, as it were?
i personally can't live without it for very long... :blink:

hmm If that article is anything to go by - Click Wheel
- 1mm thinner
- Improved menu interface
- Playlist manipulation
- Audiobook Speed adjust
- 12 hour battery life
- 20gb for 15gb gen 3 price
Considering I was going to buy a Gen3 next week this has definetly thrown a spanner in the works. My only question is how long do you guys think it will take to filter into Australia? If the Ipod Mini's are anything to go buy I won't be getting a Gen4 till the end of this year
If they hit Australia in the next few weeks then I will be a happy man, otherwise I dunno what I will do

[EDIT] For the benefit of those of you have not read this thread yet, the figures below were speculative before the actual US pricing of the new iPods came out, so please read on in the thread for revised figures...
Okay, so this is the rumour/speculation I've gathered from the Macrumors forums etc -
20GB - USD249
(though I'm thinking it probably be $299 to distinguish from the Mini, but time will tell) (EDIT - this was correct as reflected in the actual US pricing)
40GB - USD349 (EDIT - actually 399)
60GB - USD449 (EDIT - no 60GB released as yet)
That would mean (on a strict conversion, and a more probable figure):
20GB = AUD340 (more likely AUD399)
40GB = AUD477 (more likely AUD499)
60GB = AUD613 (more likely AUD649 or AUD699)
Again, the Australian prices are quite tricky to determine, but I think these guesstimates are roughly on the mark. Awesome price drops, especially for the high end model with 50% more storage.
There are plenty of photos up at Newsweek at the link provided by eni...
My concern is working out when these become available, both in the US and over here. Of course we're familiar with the 5 month delay for Minis, but the last time the iPod was updated in September of last year, the 40GBs hit our shelves within a week or two, so you've got to wonder how quick these new ones will get here. Especially given that they will be phasing out the older models (hence 'Work to your own beat' and 'Cram and jam') and need to start pushing these new ones.
I'm hoping the Apple Australia store is down this time tomorrow evening for maintenance and returns with good news
