Default Firewire "Target mode" problem

Dear mac users,
In the past I have successfully CCloned images of my mac's Hard drive onto another mac's hdd(target mac is started in Target mode" and appears as a external drive on the source mac's desktop).
Having connected each mac using a simple firewire cable (same one as I always use)and it works very well however, today's attempt didn't work and resulted in the target mac failing to startup or sometimes starting up and unable to connect to the source mac.
The only way I have been able to get the source mac's image onto another mac is to CClone onto a external firewire drive and then CClone onto the target mac's HDD (target mac has two HDD's and I start up from the 2nd HDD and CClone from ext' to the HDD to be reimaged, works fine that way.
Has there been recent changes to any updates that could have caused this behaviour or am I getting it all mixed somehow?
Using all PPC's running OS X.4.11 and OSX.5.7 on G4-800 dual and G4-1.25 dual mac's.Have tried other f/wire cables with same result.
Any helpful advice would be really appreciated,to make thing easier to CClone mac's.
Regards
mulquemi
