Question How to: join two movie files into one?

I am extremely new to iDVD and the whole movie/video editing thing on a Mac.

I have a few movies that are separated into two files (*.avi). Which program can I use to join them into one? So I don't have an intermission and can seamlessly play the movie in one go?

I have the desire to eventually convert them to an iTunes/AppleTV format, so I can use Plex or another system to play all my media content.

Cheers

You can use Quicktime to do this if you have the Pro version. Open the first file then open the second file. In the second file click on Edit then Select All. In the first file click Edit then Paste. The second file is appended to the end of the first file. Then just click Save As in the first file, choose your format options and you're away.

It's worth the outlay, I find myself using it A LOT, mostly to save trailers and other online movies that play in the browser QT window but it does come in handy a lot for quick video stitching etc

Well, I'll wait for Quicktime X when Snow Leopard arrives. Isn't it suppose to supersede Pro?

Yep, the version of Quicktime in Snow Leopard will include all the features of the "pro" version by default.

I use an app called "D-Vision" to join AVI's.. (mainly DIVX files)

Eg:
Movie_clip1.avi
Movie_clip2.avi

merge to Movie_clip.avi

works very well

You can join the files with ffmpegx and convert them as well. Another option is VisualHub which will join/convert/load into iTunes all in one operation. I love this software.

Another solution is not downloading torrents and buying the DVD instead.

I use a program called SimpleMovieX.

It's not that expensive, and lets you do native editing of avi (xvid/divx) as well as h.264 mp4 so you don't have to re-encode every time you make a change - it edits the file directly.

Lots of other nice features too.

Regards,
Shane.

MPEG Streamclip. Just open both files at the same time and it will join them without any work. You can then export to whatever format you like.

It's a little clunky but is a really great app. I now use it for all my converting and basic editing.
