Default Next G non-connect

Trying to connect my new MacBook to the net.
I have the Telstra wireless desktop modem(240V) and it works OK on my PC but it just won't load onto the Mac.
The software gets to the "connecting to Telstra" stage and just sits there. Then it starts with the stupid suggestions like try again in 5 minutes etc etc.
I rang Telstra, (that was a waste of an afternoon) but he said something about downloading an update to re-flash the software, difficult when I can't get the Mac connected.
I borrowed my son's mobile USB style Telstra modem, loaded the software for it and it worked fine.
Am I doing something very wrong here?

EDIT: I just deleted my response, as I realised that it wasn't going to be helpful after re-reading your question.
