Exclamation Imac Sound is Gone!!!

My 2006 intel imac, all of a sudden, lost its sound. I heard two loud pops and boom! it was all silent. I tied playing a piece of music but no sound was heard. I cranked the volume up to max and still nothing. I muted the internal speaker and I heard a loud pop and when I unmuted it, another pop.

I'm running 10.4.11 and this hasn't happened before.

Are my speakers broken?

Is it the sound card?

I haven't tried rebooting yet.

Please help. BTW, it was my internal Speakers and I have no earphones/external speakers plugged in.

Try rebooting first before jumping to conclusions. If that doesn't fix it, then try and plug some headphones in to see if you get sound in them.

I've seen this happen in Leopard.

There are two possible cures:

(A) Shut it down. Start it up again.

(B) Reset the SMC (System Management Controller).

  1. From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down.
  2. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
  5. Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

is there a possibility that my imac may not boot up again once I shut it down?

Default Hooray!

My sound is now back! I wonder what caused it. Anyway, I muted the sound 4 a whole night and now its fixed!

Is this problem likely to repeat itself?

I've noticed this a few times recently on my eMac running Leopard. Definitely before I updated to 10.5.7 recently. I can't remember it happening since then. Nor can I put my finger on the possible cause. A reboot always fixes things.
