Default Playing wmv files?

I have searched on this forum and read that VLC i think it is will play wmv files. What i would like to know is is there a program that is best for the most files. I have divx player and quicktime also. what im not looking to do is have heeps of media players installed on my computer. Is VLC better than divx etc. I would like ideally to have quicktime and possibly one other. just wondering if any mac experts have some good tips as im still getting to know my mac and the all the good things it has to provide me.

thx in advance

VLC plays them all back. When in doubt, use VLC.

I use flip4mac and perian. Having both of these installed means that i can view wmv and xvid files in quicktime, i dont need any other players.

Yeah, flip4mac is good when you're wanting to view embedded videos.

is flip for mac and perian another application? forgive my lack of real computing knowledge. Is it something you download and it installs into quicktime or are they separate applications that you need to start when watching a wmv file.

Pretty much download Flip4Mac and Perian (both are plugins/addons for Quicktime Player that comes on the mac). Just google them and you'll be able to download them. Then download VLC.

If you wanna watch something, try it in quicktime. If that fails... open it in VLC and you'll never have any video-playing issues ever again!

They plug into quicktime, so you won't need any other application.

I personally hate VLC, sure it plays most files, but the interface etc. is stereotypical open-source ugly.

VLC won't play many WMV formats.

Flip for Mac and Perian are both Quicktime components that enable additional codecs. You can then watch DIVX and WMV inside Quicktime Player.

Flip4Mac and Perian also mean QuickView in Leopard will be able to playback more formats.

It should also be noted Flip4Mac is Microsoft's endorsed method of playing back WMV in OSX.
