Default TiVo to Mac

Hi,

I want to get recording from the TiVo to my Mac and I need a MAK, which I can't find anywhere. I've also read that the settings menu needs to say, TiVoToGO a,a,a and it says i,i,i.

Any help would be appreciated

Is this an official Australian TiVo, or a hacked ozTiVo?

Sounds like an official TiVo,

this is impossible to achieve at the moment as far as I know and the Media Access Key has been disabled. (My TiVo says i,i,i as well).

TiVo are meant to be releasing an upgrade sometime for it which will allow this function but of course theyre gonna charge (<$100) for it.

Edit: More info available 3rd paragraph down here.

Yes it's a official Australian TiVo.

I had heard of people going into the 'My TiVo' section on the site (US) and accessing DVR options that on the Australian site were non existent.

This explains it, thanks.

To copy video from the TiVo you'll need the "TiVo home networking Package".

It's been released recently and costs $199.

Also, "Mac users require additional third party software to take full advantage of the Home Networking Package". The third party software is Toast, available for about $154, bringing the total to $353.

Also #2: "A regular on the DTV forums has posted first impressions on the network software. Main points so far seem to be painfully slow network transfer speeds and copy protection on some FTA shows making them impossible to copy".

So even if you buy it, you might not be able to copy recordings.

EyeTV never looked so good.

Tim,

The MAK (Media Access Key) isn't enabled out of the box in the Australian TiVo. The Home Network Package has just been released which enables this.

A good place to get info on the TiVo & discuss is over on Australian TiVo Forums - Powered by vBulletin

Note: Currently the price to enable it is at an unbelievably high price point of $199. Lot's of annoyance being felt right now by people - especially seeing back in July 2008 Mark Hughes, TiVo general manager stated this:

Quote:
The home networking functionality and the ability to load recorded shows to a portable device like the iPod will only be available early next year for a fee in the "tens of dollars"

$199 for an activation key????

Complete joke. Now have to find where i read the TiVo boss saying itd cost in the tens of dollars.

TiVo treat their users with comtempt. Outrageous charges like this combined with sly Channel 7 marketing techniques... I remember turning on my TiVo and in the main menu finding an option to record channel 7's upcoming Madagasca movie. Shocking.

Link is at the end of my post above

Note: One thing I've noticed is it's a rip-off for single TiVo households. I have two, and will eventually have 3 (when I can eventually afford it) and the $199 fee is for the account, not per TiVo... so makes it a little more affordable.

Regards,
Shane.

Ice TV's website has a nice table comparing features between WMC/EyeTV, Mac/EyeTV, PVRs and Tivo.

Lots of red and Nos in the Tivo column!!

Yeah - but it's out of date at the moment. Now the (way-too-expensive) Home Network Pack is out (and external storage tba) then I guess they'll update it.

I hope they cover off the TCO argument though, as their subscription puts them at $99 a year, which means the Home Network Pack for TiVo is paid in 2 years and then theres no more to pay.

Note the Home Network Pack enables your TiVo account for these features, not an individual TiVo box - so if you have more than one TiVo the cost is spread across the hardware.

Regards,
Shane.

Wow. this thread is yet another reason not to spend fucking $700 on a crippled piece of decade old technology.

I'm really floored that there's even a market for TiVo in Australia.

Keep in mind who they have as business partners.

$353 for Mac users (you need to buy Toast as well).

Marc,

One thing wrong in the updated comparison is that multi room is supported via the home network pack (ie under the media extender heading).

Shane.

Oh also note, you don't need Toast for Mac - iTiVo works brilliantly & is free.

One other thing if it's not clear - the $199 fee is a once off for your TiVo account, & I don't think it matters how many TiVo's you own (I've seen it working with 2 at the moment - so only $99.50 per TiVo as a once-off payment).

Regards,
Shane.

Thanks. Will correct the multi-room playback point.

Fair call regarding iTiVo.

A thought: seems like the price has been set so high, that maybe they don't actually want people to buy it? Can't imagine 7 would be happy with people copying shows from their TiVo to their iPods etc.

Edit: Updated the comparison page with the TiVo multi-room and more.

I purchased my Home Networking Package for $99 last night, and I am currently using iTiVo (to download from my TiVo) and pyTiVoX (with Streambaby, to stream to the TiVo). I also installed TiVo Desktop for Mac (TiVo's own app) which streams music from iTunes and photos from iPhoto.

It's fantastic! It just works - using Bonjour networking.
The only disappointment is that TiVo Desktop for Mac only streams MP3 music. AAC does not work (even non-DRM'd AAC).

Get in quickly and purchase it for $99 before 1 April. I still think $99 is too expensive, but it's much better than the $199 it was first listed for.

$199 is dangerously close to the price of a second hand AppleTV... something that will stream AAC files with and without DRM, play video or any codec you like if you hack it, view photos better than TiVo, and do other things.

Funny thing about the Tivo to mac it works. But the PC version not many folks can get to work. I being one of them. Also using Tivo transfer in Toast or Popcorn is allot faster than iTivo shareware app. So there is some small reward for spending money.

How long does it take you to transfer say, a one-hour HD show?

About 20 min my network is the old AirPort Extreme "Snow"

I will say the Tivo Transfer app sucks every bit of juice out of my G4 mini. I didnt notice this with iTivo but it took for ever to get one show copied over.

So I need roughly an hour of mini time to copy & convert with Popcorn to AppleTV format. A newer Intel mac should do the job allot faster ?
