Default Huawei e220 Optus USB Internet questions

Hey guys another shot in the dark,

On the iMac, I installed the mobile connect program, typed in *99# and away she goes. On startup I get an error, unknown device eject or ignore, ignore and she still dials and connects. My problem is that the connection dies for no reason. From what I've read on forums you can update the firmware but u need a windows machine, or setup a script the pin google every 10 seconds or the extreme getting resistors on the USB wire to stop the power strikes on large downloads or inactivity to stop the modem from disconnecting from the connection.. Cable isn't an option and I've signed for this contract, looked at upgrading to the e169 as there's one on eBay to see if that can stop the dropouts. Anything else I should try ?

These things need a Kernel Extension don't they ?
( I think 10.5 is incompatible - I recall a previous thread where an iMac was Kernel Panicking all the time)

Are you sure you have the extension installed and is it the current version ?

Take it into Optus and they'll update the firmware on site. It's showing the eject/ignore thing because the device has a usb flash memory on board, which holds the windows software to connect to the internet using the modem. i get it showing that on my mac and i just ignore it. things work for me because i updated the firmware on my windows laptop ages ago.

the thing has never been on a Windows machine ever. left msn messenger running today and the connection didnt drop and it only used 3mb to stay online which is pretty good. I guess i can live with the warning message on start-up even thou it doesnt do that on my macbookpro intel.

thanks for the replies guys.

Hi all, I don't mean to hi-jack someones thread, but I am also having a similar problem. I have just purchased a E220 and have updated to the latest firmware and I get a connection but only for about 5 mins then my macbook throws a hissy fit and says it cannot find the E220.

I have installed all the intel drivers uninstalled and reinstalled, searched the forums and the internet for answers, but I have no idea what to do next. The problem appears mainly when I do any downloads.

If anyone could give me some pointers it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Where are you located and what time are you using it?

Optus really don't hold good coverage out of certain areas and at certain times it won't even connect for me. (usually in peak hour)

Tried a different cable? Those short cables on the E220s are notorious for failing. They're just mini-USB to USB so you've probably got a digital camera or non-iPod MP3 player around somewhere which uses the same cord.
