Nike + brilliant for getting fit

Hey guys,

Um, I am a nerd. Lets put it plain and simple. A nerd. I know everything, love my macs, and spend my days sitting behind a desk tapping a keyboard. Recently, however, a convergence of factors convinced me to buy an iPod Nano, 4th Gen. Just today... I decided that I could justify this purchase with one further one: Nike +

I haven't even bought it yet, but looking at the website, down to iTunes and the great music and workouts there, its clear that this is... Wow...

I have pounds to lose. I have a shape to get to. I now have a way to do it. I can't believe that someone I used to go to school with (Craig Motteram, great guy, Olympic athelete and downright great runner) is gonna be coaching me through workouts, and I am getting pumped already for when I get into the store to do some great running and to push my limit.

Oh, yeah, and the fact that I am dating a fitness freak means that this will go over GREAT!

Just wanted to sing the praises for Nike + and am surprised it took so long to get onto it.

How about you, if you are a nerd or geek like myself get out there and get active with nike +!

(BTW, I am not responsible for any bouncing flab that may be caused by my recommendation here, lol!)

Bought Nike +

started running.

developed shin splints.

stopped running.

But to be fair, it's up to me to start cross training, so the bike is getting serviced this weekend.

Does Nike+ work with the iPhone? Like, can you buy the dongle, and it will be compatible? I'd totally get it then.

hmmm where is the problem ahh ther it is... started running!!

dude just start by walking. that's all I do. 4 - 10km a day.
(although I have been off the Nike + this month - it crashed wiping out my first walk of September which was very demoralising as it was a 10km version... will be back in October though)

It's kind of stupid. Running isn't a very good way of getting fit, or loose weight. Well, only one form of running is.

Your best options are:
-For running, look up something called HITT (high intensity interval training). This tricks your bodies metabolism, and does wonders. Don't fucking bother doing anything else but HITT. Seriously. It's the hardest workout anyone will ever do, and it's like that for a reason. If you're so pumped to loose weight, do this, or don't even bother.

Don't lie to yourself saying "oh, im too tired for this interval, so i'll just jog for another few mins". Once you do that, you lost. Keep mentally focused, because your mind will give up before your body. On that note, i wouldn't do HITT while running. It will fuck your knees/ankles, especially if you're a fatty fat fat who is and has been unfit for years. Your joints will be weak and pathetic and will easily become damaged. Get your ass on a bike instead.

-On top of this, join a gym, and do weight training. Lifting weights burns shit loads of energy. It is also less strenuous on your knees/ankles like running is, and the added bonis is if you do weights 3 times a week for a few months, your joints and tendons should be getting stronger and stronger.

All in all, get a bike or join a gym. I wouldn't even bother with the Nike+, just get some self motivation.

Also make sure the shoes suit your running style. Most independent running shops will video you running to see where your foot strikes the floor and where you need support. Or at least go to the Athlete's Foot and use their pressure measuring thing.

Unfortunately I totally ignored the advice from the guy in the shop so I could get a pair of Nikes to use with my iPod... it worked brilliantly until I got shin splints so a month later I was back in the shop to get more sadly non-Nike shoes and haven't had a problem since.

That would be HIIT then, not HITT? Useful as a kick-start but not as an ongoing training/fitness regime. The important thing with exercise is to do something that you enjoy, otherwise you're not going to keep doing it.

The Nike+ is a perfect way of self-motivation for people like me who like techie things. I don't use it any more as Nike shoes don't work for me, but a big part of how I motivate myself running is to track my progress over time, map out runs on mapmyrun.com and keeping spreadsheets on average paces etc... That's what motivates me. Different things work for different people so don't knock it if it doesn't work for you!

If you have the new Touch, do you need the dongle part or just the Nike transponder?

I don't use nikes... I have NB with the dongle attached to the laces.

People ask me what is that? and it looks a bit silly.. but it works fine.
