Questions on iPod Touch 2G

I am seriously thinking of getting the new iPod Touch 32GB. I have not had much of a play with the iPod Touch or the iPhone (ok 10 mins in the NY 5th Ave store in July) so I am interested in others experiences. Oh and I was I was originally thinking of getting an iPhone, but work already provides me with a phone and I really do not need another phone...

  • How are these for actual web browsing? The zoom works ok?
  • Can I transfer word/excel/power point and pdf files to it and read them?
  • Has anyone run the web based Lotus Notes on it? (no not the new iPhone specific one the iNotes web interface that has been around for a while)
  • Anyone tried a using one of the remote desktop apps? I currently can remote login using RDC from my iMac, it would be handy to do this from the iPod Touch.
  • I don't have a wireless router and have not played much with wifi. Does setting up an ad-hoc network from a Mac work ok?
  • Videos need to be in MPEG4/Mov?
  • Has anyone tried the wifi sharing from EyeTV and does this work ok?
  • Can I use it to make a Keynote or Powerpoint presentation via the video out?

works great

Can I transfer word/excel/power point and pdf files to it and read them?
word and excel, yes. Powerpoint, no.

Has anyone run the web based Lotus Notes on it? (no not the new iPhone specific one the iNotes web interface that has been around for a while)
not me.

Anyone tried a using one of the remote desktop apps? I currently can remote login using RDC from my iMac, it would be handy to do this from the iPod Touch.
Sure have. tried VNC lite, VNC, teleport. All worked a treat!

I don't have a wireless router and have not played much with wifi. Does setting up an ad-hoc network from a Mac work ok?
dunno..

Videos need to be in MPEG4/Mov?
.mp4, or .m4v. There is an app in cydia that allows you to play heaps of extensions.

Has anyone tried the wifi sharing from EyeTV and does this work ok?
not me.

Can I use it to make a Keynote or Powerpoint presentation via the video out?
if you saved the presentation as a compatible movie, but the quality will be horrible.

HTH,
Beau

Works just fine. Pinch or double tap to zoom in/out.

Using one of the apps from the App Store, you can easily transfer Word, Excel and PDF files to the iPhone, and look at them with the same zoom-goodness as with web browsing

Not sure mate - not a Lotus Notes user.

There are a couple of apps on the App Store that support VNC, SSH (terminal) etc etc - currently using Jaadu with no issues

Works brilliantly. AirPort menu (on your Mac), then 'Create Network'. Then just join it on your touch.
If you'd also like to access the net, turn on Internet Sharing in System preferences

If they play in iTunes, it can convert it for your iPod without any dramas.

Can't help you there....

As long as it's saved as a movie file, (you can't use the video out for anything other than Photos and Videos)

You can view PowerPoint presentations without animations by downloading them as e-mail attachments; I tried to copy a PowerPoint file via 'airsharing' and it crashed (It was 200+ slides) but I assume it will also work here.

Another question. How well does the Wifi work for finding your location in Australia?

Not as good as iPhone 3G but still decent. It's not pinpoint if that's what you're asking.

I would say it is equivalent to iPhone 2G (1st gen) without GPS.

The EyeTV thing works quite well. I haven't got to use it much, but when I did I was impressed by the results. The only downside is that EyeTV doesn't like it when you put the Mac to sleep when it's converting to a stream-friendly format, and might end up crashing. That's what mine did, anyway.

Played with an iPod Touch in the Sydney Apple Store today. One thing I could not get was how to change the screen from portrait to landscape for Safari or Calculator. And yes I tried the obvious rotating it but that did not work. Is it possible it was just the accelerometers are stuffed (I did try 2 different ones) or am I missing something?

Could just be the accelerometers.

Try 'shaking' it and seeing what happens next time.
