It's official: Apple didn't invent the iPod
This is Kane Kramer, the acknowledged father of the iPod, according to Apple.
Kramer invented and patented solid-state music playback way back in 1979, and held the patents in over 120 countries, but when he failed to raise the $120,000 necessary to renew them, the patents lapsed into the public domain in 1988.

I like how his design allowed for a grand total of 3 minutes of music.
Good on him for inventing the concept and all, but I think he's asking a bit much. It's not like the idea of storing music in flash memory would never have happened without his design. I'm not really sure why he thinks he should be getting a cut, as he didn't really have anything to do with the creation of the iPod, and as they've said, his original patent is in the public domain now.

Apple didn't invent the solid state music player as such but they did take it to a new level with good design, good user interface and software intergration that leaves everything else in the dust.Unfortunately for Kramer his idea was way ahead of the technology at the time as each kb of ram had to be carved by skilled stonemasons.

Seeing as Apple employed Mr Kramer in their case against Burst, and Apple have acknowledged the ideas Mr Kramer had in the late 70's, the very least they could do is give him a one off payment, not just an iPod.

From what I've heard he came up with the principle idea of having 'a portable media player'.
If thats the case, why is Apple being singled out and not Sony, Creative and the rest who've made such a device?
Sure the guy deserves some credit but does he deserve compensation for Apple taking the step and actually making the device so popular?
And if people say yes to that question, whoever invented the 'Burger' do they get royalties or whatnot from McDonalds or Hungry Jacks for making such a product so popular?

I had a Creative Nomad MP3 player way back in 2000 or 2001, can't remember for sure but it was almost certainly before the first ipods were produced. i think from memory the Nomad Jukebox was around back then as well, which I'm almost certain preceded the ipod. Of course the ipod became much more popular very quickly after that. Point is that Apple didn't copy his idea, other people did first

Deceptive title, of course Apple invented the iPod! They didn't, however, invent with the concept of a digital portable music player :-)

So where did he whinge about the credit crunch? He had to close his business and got on with it, from what I read in the article. He still would have been a no name if Apple hadn't secured his services in their legal case with burst.com. I don't remember this guy jumping up and down when the iPod was first released....

Apple invented the iPod not the Mp3 player. People forget that there was poritble mp3 players before apple. Half the time the ipod has been around its been on a hard drive and not flash. I just dont get it.

I love this from the comments:

Do you want to be an "inventor" like this guy? It's simple. Get yourself some graph paper and some crayson and sketch out a weightless, holographic audio player that's controlled telepathically. And when such a device is actually created in the year 2090, feel free to claim credit for it.

Not entirely fair, but quite funny. :-)

Um, you could really say that about anyone who invents anything. For example "Oh, it's not as though the idea for the theory of relativity would never have happened without his design". You know what that reasoning's called? I'll give you a hint... NOTHING LESS THAN ABSOLUTELY RETARDED!
He was the person who invented the idea and design for what we know today, and he should be financially rewarded/compensated. That's all part of being part of a capitalist country (You get rewarded for contributing to the development of society and thus our civilization).
Hey, while your at it goon, why not say "It's not as though the idea for the personal computer would never have happened without Steve Job's creation of the Apple II".

He invented an idea, good on him. He didn't invent the design of anything in use today though, and his patent expired well before the iPod even if he'd paid for its maintenance for the full 20 years.
