Thanks for that

Tried a couple of those steps but still no good.

My partner seems to think it may have something to do with our internet connection. For descent speeds i need to run two-way satellite 1mbps/512. At a cost id rather not say.
Anyway downloaded the 165mb file again and it said done in the downloads of itunes but no joy from the touch, somewhere it went wrong whilst installing.
I live on a farm, but my partners parents live 30kms away and have adsl.
We have been buying tv shows from us itunes and they have a similar problem they error towards the end of downloading.
She informs me that when using adsl there is no issue with erroring and tv shows download without any dramas.

any thoughts?

DFU mode will allow you to avoid any non-hardware related issues.

To put into DFU Mode connect to your computer and open iTunes. Let it do its business, and now: Hold the home and power buttons till it turns off. Keep holding home but let go of the power button. Hold home till iTunes comes up with it in recovery mode, but the screen remains black.

Press option on your computer, and click restore. It will now allow you to find the IPSW file you are looking for. If it downloaded correctly it will be in: ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates and will be called "iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" Select that one, and run that.

It should work this time. You should have no errors. This mode totally disconnects iTunes from any information about the drive. It is basically... God mode for the iPod. It's the BIOS of the iPhone really, and the entire OS of the touch is offline so it can't throw an error. It just rewrites over the old one. Basically like reinstalling Windows or Mac OS X. The Hard Drive has no control.

I kept getting that same message ,just try on a different USB port before you do anything, if that doesnt work then you know it's something more serious.

Maybe it's the iPod? Have you tried talking to Apple?

Hi got it working again.
I did something similar to what Barcode said, many thanks for that by the way.
So when things error like that and also itunes downloads is it more to do with itunes than my internet?

Your internet has nothing to do with it.

You'll still get that problem if you were on dialup.

Update to 7.7.1, which was just released today and see how you go.

Red face

i guess its in dfu mode, as its completely inert until i connect it to the laptop (vista). tried moving the usb cable, didnt work, tried right clicking on the iphone icon to restore from backup but that option isnt available, only open/eject. couldnt find "option" so that is out, each thing i try leaves me with a lump connected to the computer, that says "error(9)". couldnt find that ispw file either..

edit- all fixed. had to remove and re-install all the itunes stuff, then restarted it. phone was restored with no further issues. whew.
